One of my favourite writing games:

1. Pick a cheese you have strong feelings about. You can like or dislike it, have strong associations with it, as you wish, just not a boring or neutral cheese.

2. Write a personal ad from the point of the view of the cheese.

I use this as a warm up in writing workshops. It's too ridiculous to take seriously so people tend to have fun with it.

To kickstart my creative year I challenged myself to write 30 story starts (beginnings of new stories) in 30 days. I wrote the last one this morning.

Did this exercise help my writing? I don't know.

Will I turn any of the starts into full stories? Maybe.

Am I glad to be done? DEFINITELY!

I have remembered how much I love Charles Simic's translations of Vasko Popa. here's an old writing exercise I developed based on this poem from the Quartz Pebble cycle.

#Write quickly without much thought a list of 10 of your qualities. Firstly with the hand you normally write with and then with the hand you don’t normally write with. Be honest, no judgment.

I am right handed.

My right- handed list:

Tallish, annoying, sensitive, quiet, scared, overly-respectful, wild-haired, agile, fit, thoughtful

My left-handed list:

Worrying, kind, bleak, melancholy, law-abiding, reflective, creative, determined, silly, obsessive

I wasn't able to write during the holidays as my body didn't adjust to the Philippine time. And there were family-related things I fortunately sorted. So in order to kick off my #PhD writing, here is my first blog entry on #MissUniverse and #pageantry.
