Just heard about the Bitter Oleander Press Library of Poetry Award 2023 contest. First prize is $1,500 and also publication. The deadline is a little less than a month away for any who want to enter
bitteroleander.com/contest.htm

Question/Advice seeking: i didnt see a way to read, even preview, previous winners entries. While i enjoy writing poetry (or poetryish) i have next to know idea what a publisher/contest is looking for in a Poetry Manuscript. Requirements are 48-80 types pages in length, and it seems to suggest that it can/would include multiple poems.

Does anyone know;
-Should it only be one poem to a typed page (as far as length expectations) or should multiple small poems be on the same page?

-i assume there should be some connective theme at least, but are the poems expected to be directly connected to each other, or just fit well in a collection?

-What else should an obviously uninformed novice know about assembling a manuscript for entry?

Boosts Appreciated

Anyone have a better way to put "stone throne", please? My brain is mush and I can't take myself seriously with that kind of rhyme.

Does anyone have any knowledge of peat bogs and climate change? I'm planning a story and want a character to be doing some sort of work or study in a peat bog, possibly with the aim of preserving or restoring peat bogs. Not sure if the field of study would be or or#agronomy or or some other field of and I would appreciate any suggestions or pointers in the right direction. Thank you!

Hey team - let’s share the *specific* skills we want to build in our writing, and if you’re good at something you see someone struggling with, reach out to them.

I’ll start: I’m good at writing Natural dialog, but I find I move from dialog to action without reflection too often, which can leave my writing feeling jumpy.

Currently having an sad-scary struggle.

If I want my to feel sad, I have to create a connection with the characters by giving more context and substance on their innermost feelings, creating that thread that makes you feel like you know those people personally.

On the other hand I want an eerie atmosphere and to do that create a feeling of mystery and only partial connection - like you COULD know these characters, but you didn't have a chance to.

Almost . My buddy Vera is hanging out with me while I write my new novella that might be spiraling into a novel.
Funny side note, Vera interviewed me for my newsletter recently with all the irritation and spite you’d expect from a cat.

Screenwriters: think Japanese when developing your characters. Flaws are beautiful.

External conflict: Garret the hermit crab loves his home, so when a raven steals his shell, he has to travel the wilderness unprotected to get it back.

- - -

I want to practice writing internal conflict, but I'm having a hard time coming up with good or compelling ones for this exercise.

Does anybody have any tips for creating good internal conflict? Exercises, or guides for coming up with good ones?

Thanks!

@TechieInAK A different take on writing exercise books... The Writer's Coloring Book writerscoloringbook.com/
Worksheets (with a couple coloring doodads, it looks like..and it seems to encourage the use of glitter, that's good) to help you plan scenes and the like.
Not something I'd use (see also EVERYBODY'S PANTS NOW youtube.com/watch?v=OApLDOqLym ), but it's novel enough I thought I'd repost.
