@cavyherd Oh, absolutely. That's perfectly standard. Everyone has something they don't get without a lot of effort and revision, but knowing where it should go is very helpful, and putting down what you know, which is often wildly different from just knowing it, can cast shadows that the shape of what you're missing.

Okay, actually got some movement on this particular conundrum this morning. (i.e., content to plug into the empty socket).

I guess the (well, one) answer to this is to write the scene, leave a [placeholder] for the part you haven't fleshed out yet, and then have faith that all will become clear in time?

(The part that's tricky is when the particulars of the [content] affect the tone of the character relationship.)

Oh, no, I got the characters. Very vividly! And the rough sketch of the setting. It's just the actual *content* I'm missing. Mostly because I don't care 😆

Like—how does that even *work*??

@cavyherd Oh, interesting, that beat doesn't come with characters per se? I usually, not always, start with characters, and they have lives and relationships and contexts attached, though sometimes parts of that are hard to get at.

Look more practice!

Oh yes! Thank you! Have now subscribed to those as well.

Yeah, I'm kind of sitting here thinking about the fact that my favorite failure mode is: I come up with character/relationship beat I want to hit, and I have the structure in mind so clearly I can taste it. But I don't have any actual /content/ for it, so I just sit spinning my wheels in frustration.

See? Me! Practicing! Aren't ya proud of me? 😊

@cavyherd It's definitely more fun to ask a friend. There's also and , but those don't get a lot of use. Should I have a writing thought other than ARGH, I could try using them.

I have helped out friends with writing their back-of-the-book blurb, and I really enjoyed the challenge. Trying to write mine is not nearly as much fun.

Enjoyed this deep, comparative dive into fictional multiverses, particularly for the purpose of . I’m not a big comic reader, so I have knowledge gaps here, but I love learning how a trope like multiverses works well (Everything Everywhere All At Once) vs. failing spectacularly (DC Universe, Infinite Earth Crisis, etc).
Also enjoyed the playful banter Overly Sarcastic Productions brings to their vids… it’s a nice break from the video essay format. youtu.be/GE95DZndTO8

I’m at the point writing TBoQ (Crow’s Gambit Book 2) that I’m trying to plug the holes and fix the pacing. There are things that I _know_ don’t work as they’re written, and sub-plots and arcs that I need to give more attention. It’s _good_ that I know these things. I can work on fixing them. I need to keep reminding myself of that.

It’s not “broken”, it’s simply not finished being put together yet.

I’ll get there.

Now we're into December, it's probably time for my regular posting of a short story I wrote a few years back. Santa may bring joy to children, but that doesn't mean his yearly visit is without disruption.

It is... not heartwarming.

Me to the S.O.: “I just don’t know how to get the dog over the wall, she’s like a hundred pound dog, they can’t just carry her.”
S.O.: “The dog’s immortal right? So trebuchet.”
Me: *stares at the S.O. in horror* “How could you….”
