When writing cozy fantasy, instead of stressing about "low stakes" conflict, it might be more fun to consider conflict that lends itself to *cozy* solutions.

A great way to add depth to your writing is to craft short stories exploring different characters and elements of your work. Not with a view to info-dump everything you learn. But so that you can have characters and narration reference little details. You readers don't need to explicitly know every little detail of your world building to appreciate that it is there.

'Stuart Willis talks to philosopher swordsperson Damon Young about how they have applied the lessons they’ve learnt from historical European martial arts (HEMA) to screenwriting. It might sound a bit niche if you don’t write about people hitting each other – or in my case, aliens – with swords, but I promise you that it’s a fascinating listen.'

Thanks to @suw for the shout-out. chocolateandvodka.com/2023/06/

Within Western storytelling, the one rule that doesn't have exceptions is that your story needs conflict. Is this at odds with the low stakes nature of cozy fantasy?

"All is well" can be a great place to start or end a novel, but it's best avoided at every other stage.

Use hard line breaks for scene transitions only when necessary, not to bridge short distances or gaps in time. Keep your reader in the scene.

We love to play with words, but big words should never get in the way of successful communication. I'm not talking about long words. I'm talking about words you know that others might not.

Whatever your area of expertise, you know words that others do not. I call them "stop words." As in "stop reading."

In this week's Writer's Guide newsletter, I explain how I avoid big words (it's not that hard for me!) and how you can, too.
