Today In Labor History June 29, 1898: Michael Schwab, who was convicted for the Haymarket bombing, died from tuberculosis, after having been pardoned and released from prison just a few months prior. Schwab, who was born in Germany, was a bookbinder by trade. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1879 and wrote for the labor newspaper, “Arbeiter-Zeitung.” His brother in-law, Rudolph Schnaubelt, is believed by some to be the person who actually threw the Haymarket bomb. Schnaubelt was never tried or convicted of the crime. 8 other anarchists, none of whom were present at the bombing, were convicted of the crime. 4 were hanged. And one committed suicide in prison.

There are people who would have executed Michael Luera the day he pled guilty. Good thing they didn't.

Today in Labor History March 20, 2000: Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rap Brown, was arrested for murdering a Georgia sheriff’s deputy. Al-Amin had been a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Black Panthers. He once said that “violence is as American as cherry pie.” Al-Amin denied shooting the deputy. His fingerprints were not found on the murder weapon. He had no gunshot wounds, though officers who were present at the shootout claimed that the suspect had been hit and wounded. Another man, Otis Jackson, later confessed to being the shooter, but the authorities have repeatedly denied Al-Amin’s requests for a retrial. He is now serving a life sentence. He had been at Florence supermax, under a gag order preventing interviews with journalists. In 2014, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He is now at the U.S. Penitentiary, Tucson. In April 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear his appeal from al-Amin.

When society hands the police and prosecutors an extraordinary role of state sanctioned violence to uphold the rule of law, there is a concomitant extraordinary responsibility to get it right, question oneself as to whether one got it right, and to work for actual justice, not random retribution.

Sandra Hemme has spent more than 42 years in prison– if exonerated, her prison term would mark the longest known wrongful conviction of a woman in U.S. history. So proud of the lawyers on my team fighting for her at the

15 years for a crime he didn't commit. People--even other cops--said he didn't do it. But the state prosecuted him anyway and sent him to prison. The prosecutors hid evidence, too. Hey @uakron, is he getting another scholarship?

Almost 40 years behind bars for a crime he didn't commit. They tried to execute him twice. And how many other crimes did the original perpetrator commit when he should have been in prison?

It's awesome that compensates those who were wrongfully convicted. But the DNA requirement needs to go away. There are plenty of ways people get exonerated without the use of DNA evidence.

This is outstanding news and long overdue. There was SO much wrong with how the Satanic Panic cases were handled. I'd like to think we've progressed to the point that this could never happen again, but I know better. Some of Mr. Quinney's wrongful conviction compensation needs to come directly from the pockets of those involved.

It took 28 years (15 years after the proof of innocence arose) for Missouri to overturn a man’s wrongful conviction.

This is what the prosecutor wrote: “Our office defended the rule of law and worked to uphold the original verdict that a jury of Johnson’s peers deemed to be appropriate based on the facts presented at trial,” the Republican-led office said.

There is no defense of their inhumanity.
