#WSDOT took too much property for a new freeway interchange; now they're working on building high-density affordable housing there.

The supposed climate governor and the climate focused democratic party of Washington can’t seem to make it so that transit is competitive and not constantly stuck in traffic on any interstate. https://www.theurbanist.org/2023/07/26/wsdot-delays-promised-i-5-to-sr-520-transit-ramp-to-2030/ #wsdot #waleg #climate
I’m glad we’re finally getting the Rainier Valley greenway to connect to the I-90 trail in an official way. But #wsdot really needs to explain how this is now a highway purpose and why we couldn’t have built this years ago. SDOT’s original plan seems pretty much the same as many other trails and paths that connect city bike routes to highway trails (eg the ones at highway 520 which connect city bike routes to the 520 trail). https://www.theurbanist.org/2023/07/17/rainier-valley-greenways-final-segment-starts-construction-after-years-of-red-tape/ #bikes #SeaBikes
We really gotta figure out how to build transit. Estimated over $300 million for the original plan for a bus rapid #transit project of about 15 miles on hold because of the costs of it. $20m a mile for upgraded buses. Of course it’s $$ because they didn’t want to take any existing vehicle capacity and #wsdot wanted roundabouts. Absurd.
The new roundabout at the intersection of WA-9
and WA-204 is absolutely bananas highway brain. It’s a dense shopping district on all four corners with more further back along with lots of housing. But it’s 3 lanes all the way around. One of the shopping centers has two lanes exiting the roundabout into it. It’s confusing. Though I admit it’s faster to get through than the very long light cycle it had before. But it’s in a town! Also there’s no way I could navigate it on foot in the dark. #wsdot
I think this is #WSDOT—but maybe it isn’t. I’m sure Jeremy and his coworkers feel that Twitter is still a safe and trustworthy place to disseminate public safety information. /sarcasm
Well, the reply from #WSDOT was about what I expected. I’m not going to argue social network user numbers with an intern, but one might infer that the weird, unsupported reporting around Mastodon’s decline in active users is impacting decision-making.
It has been four months since my last request to WSDOT, and during that the Fediverse has had booming activity. At the same time, Twitter has killed the API that many public institutions used to publish timely information as well as many people's trust in the platform.
Now would be a great time to give feedback to key #Washington State departments to ask them to set up in the Fediverse:

This piece depresses me somewhat, partly because how slow #SDOT is at rolling bus lanes out is directly undermining King County Metro. #WSDOT is undermining all regional transit agencies by not putting real bus lanes on freeways. Any minute the bus is stuck in traffic not only makes the bus less competitive but sucks up operator time that could go to frequency (on that route or another). https://mastodon.social/@davidzipper/110095152765248838
@MicheleV_AK I have a similar image courtesy of a colleague at WA State DOT of a deer using a crosswalk, shared via Twitter. https://twitter.com/BarbChamberlain/status/1491506454703996930?s=20 #wildlife #WSDOT #infrastructure #RoadSafety

Anyone know why #wsdot didn’t build bus ramps for all bus movements to/from the Ash Way park and ride??? Not having them makes (depending on bus direction) getting to or leaving the stop very fast hit then leaving or getting to it very slow as the bus has to navigate via surface streets, multiple long signals and non-exclusive right of way. That’s a LOT of operator hours for want of a couple bus ramps.
Thanks to @mikey my #WSDOT Traffic birdsite bot seeems to be working fine. #Seattle #Traffic @wsdot_traffic
@KevinFreitas Is this your BirdsiteLIVE instance or a public one? If it is yours, can I use it to bring across #WSDOT accounts until they get their act together?
The first door knocking I did in #Seattle was to get people to tell the state they didn’t want the #wsdot boondoggle of a tunnel freeway and surface highway to replace the 99 viaduct. Now the project isn’t making enough in tolls (only ever planned to pay back a small part of the cost) and will likely get a bailout.
@qag if only #SeattleCityCouncil or #KingCountyCouncil or #WSDOT actually cared about pedestrians and cyclists over the death machine motor vehicles.
I recently tooted about us almost getting run over by a #KingCountyMetro bus and car in same trip at same intersection when we had walking light. :(
