On my 51st year as a ham. Recently has been great to resume my old passions of building antennas. Rediscovered my cw skills in time for field day this summer and now practicing to get my speed back up higher than ever. Exploring #WSPR, #APRS, #Emcomm, microcontrollers, and fun with weather balloons, which started at age 12 with Balsa wood and dry cleaner bags and birthday candles and WN9MRB, but that is another story. Glad to be here and looking forward to making friends
Transmitting #wspr tonight to see if my #antenna works properly. It was good before but I strung up to some higher tree. Let's see if it made any difference. There is still higher trees =)

Do you think we've had enough closed, irreproducible, proprietary digital modes contaminating the #hamradio hobby (#ROS, #VARA, #DMR, #YSF, #DSTAR, etc.)? Well, now we've got #LORA for #APRS.
No: ham radio should be based on open, free standards. There are plenty of free, open, well documented digital modes (#FT8, #JS9, #WSPR, #M17, #PSK, #Olivia, #RTTY) in addition to the oldest-ever digital mode (#CW). Please support ways of operation everyone can inspect, modify, or build a radio around.

The second night of #WSPR #hamradio yielded much the same picture with one very notable exception: we managed to be heard in Costa Rica

#WSPR Student project update: Today we let the student built beacon operate through the night for the first time using our club call sign, and it is fascinating to see places open up during dusk.
Yet, since our dipole mainly shoots west, eastern europe and russia only came on the map slowly while La Palma appeared relatively early

#WSPR student project update: it works!!!
After some modification to the amplifier, the oscillation has been suppressed enough. The dipole had to be shortened 15% or so due to the proximity to ground and buildings but no matter, the system works.
We got immediate spots in Great Britain on our first transmission cycle - in broad daylight @ 40m using our club call sign.
The dipole has a metal facade directly to the east, which might explain the directionality of the spots

#WSPR student project update: we have a very pretty 2 stage amplifier, had the dipole up and almost! went on the air. Alas, the amplifier developed an instability whenever our mixer was used as a source as apposed to a defined 50 Ohm load. Working on it....

@laren You're in good company.
I've been here since 2010 with an Australian Foundation Licence. I keep being told to upgrade to a "real" licence, but I'm too busy learning everything that comes my way. It shows no signs of slowing down. I've been writing a weekly podcast about my adventures for over 12 years now.
I come from an ICT background, but radio just has something intangible that keeps me entertained.
My most recent victory: my 10 mW #WSPR signal was heard 13,455 km away.
@N4JAW that's amazing and if that blows your mind, try this on for size!
Recently I reported that my 10 mW #WSPR, or Weak Signal Propagation Reporter beacon was heard 13,455 km away in Sweden by Mats SM3LNM on the 10m band.
The signal report was -25 dB, which means that with an experimental cut-off for a successful decode at -34 dB, I have 9 dB to play with, so at least theoretically, I could reduce my power even further, to 1 dBm, or just over 1 mW and still make the distance.
Looking for data. If you are or have at any time run your station as a #WSPR receiver, can you please email me a copy of your ALL_WSPR.TXT file?
Having discovered that the wsprnet.org database was down during the 2023 solar eclipse, I'm looking to compare data from individual receivers with that of the official database.
If you can email me a copy of your ALL_WSPR.TXT data file, I'd be very appreciative.

Nope. Bin eigentlich nur ein Nahbereichsfunker.
Das mit dem #WSPR ist ne Spielerei nebenher. Aber ja, dafür extra ne 10m lange Drahtantenne aufm Dachboden aufgespannt (-:
