Radio was used in the #WWI for tremendous effect. It was, however, very new technology. Note, ”wireless telegraphy” = no sound, just noise pulses used to transmit Morse codes. Here's a Russian piece of high tech as early as August 1914. (Rumours that this equipment is still used are exaggerated.)

Another map from 1912, showing the upper bend of the Niger River. It names itself as the fruit of the Gironcourt Mission, which I pinned down to Georges Regnard de Gironcourt. They're too obscure to turn up much on Google.

Interesting things about this copy of it. There's a note in the upper left naming "Dr. David Randall-MacIver" as the donor to the American Geographical Society in 1913, then a stamp at bottom stating it was later given to the Versailles Conference!

Thinking about how #WorldWarII was the first major conflict where dropping #bombs from planes on cities was a primary method of attack, realizing that that's why the scale of destruction was so much greater than #WorldWarI. Suddenly realizing that the ability of the #rich and powerful, who make decisions, and their #civilian supporters, to hide from the actual fighting may have been why #WWI wasn't "The #war to end all #wars", but #WWII, where no one could hide, killed the appetite.

It's hard for me to believe that this Red Cross Moving "Fort" was actually used to convey soldiers between trenches. How could that small wheeled frame make it across the Western Front's rough terrain? #Oswald first started this work in the years leading up to the onset of #WWI. Here, he refers to the decline as “the still untraveled stages” of “West European-American” culture.

He says that West European-American culture is “the only Culture” that is “in the phase of fulfillment”. At that time, the West was the only culture in its summer period, in full bloom.

The Searchers - the quest for the lost of the First World War. A good read. Excellent research on the casualties of #WWI and their commemoration and the development of the many cemeteries in Belgium, Northern France.
