Postscript: This came out way angrier than it should have done and worse my language is a little poor.
To clarify the shoddy language: Wayland is not a "sh-tty replacement" in the sense of thing that's sh-tty that happens to be a replacement, it's a *poor* replacement (that's the term I should have used, poor, not shitty), that is, it doesn't succeed in being a full replacement.
Also I have no objection to people liking #Wayland. What I object to is criticizing #X11 users for using features of X11 that aren't present in Wayland, and claiming they're holding back progress. Wayland isn't progress, it's a sideways move at best.
I don't think X11 is perfect, there's been a lot of thought I've had along the lines of "If I had influence 30-40 years ago, how would I have built an extensible, future proof, WIMP layer?" But it's a good system all in all.
@kmeisthax I'd also note that it always was a thing - but we're a bit late to the game. To make things work well in desktop environments we first needed atomic KMS and #Wayland. The fact that the transition from #x11 is such a pain really doesn't make things easier.
I do hope, however, that features like this will further convince people to finally leave X11 behind, given that this will be a very practical improvement for users (lots of battery time).
A student asked me today if they could use #x11 with #vscode on #windows... Of course, since I dont use VSCode or Windows, I had no idea, so I turned to Stackoverflow:
Turns out, that you can! You just need to do the following:
1. Install a X11 server like Xming
2. Install Remote-SSH plugin
3. Add DISPLAY environment variable on Windows
4. Configure #ssh on Windows to forward things
After that, the student was able to launch xeyes from a remote machine :]
There's a parallel reality in which #X11 window managers were responsible for the display of all menus. The problem where an open menu prevents the screen lock never arose.
In yet another reality, the WM also displays each window's menu bar as either part of the frame controls or at the top of the screen.
In some of these realities, the WM mediates use of the clipboard and drag-n-drop. Some of them have grab-n-drop, where the steps of d-n-d can be actions apart.
Choices were made.

I don't know whats going on, but #kde + #wayland on #tumbleweed ist unusable since recent updates. Everygame I start crashes the whole system. When I log out of my wayland session, change to #X11 and start typing my user password sddm goes suddenly into tty and I have to login there and type startx...
Not sure if #wayland is just super unstable all of a sudden or this is some #kde #kwin bullshit. Anybody problems with other wayland #de and gaming?

@orbitalmartian exactly. Yeah as I said people are free to tinker with it and if it works for their use-case great.. Just better not expect it to be on par with #X11 it has 30+ years to cover lol
People are in such a hurry to switch to #Wayland. I don't understand it. #X11 is not dead yet won't be for a long while. I am starting to feel like #Linux users have less patience than others. Test it play around with it but don't decide it's ready for prime time when Devs themselves recommend against using as daily. Too many important apps still don't fully support it and in beta.. Please be patient...
Many Distros include #Wayland support out the box, it's cool n all, but that doesn't change the fact that in reality it's not yet ready for many reasons, not all apps support it or refuse to, it still has ways to go to work on various hardware configurations.
Adding it now as it is will only cause frustrations for many users especially new ones. I mean why do that? The day will come, hopefully sooner rather than later when it's ready to replace #X11. Until then we wait, keep testing and watch.
