At work, we are strictly #onprem, with an handful of VMs used for some projects. Some months ago, we had to retire a very old #vmware installation and I decided to not repeat the error of embracing a fully proprietary solution. We have now all VMs running on #libvirt as a provider for #vagrant on a #debian box.
A vagrantfile, a few migration scripts and the whole things are now running smoothly.
I wonder why one should run #vmware, #xcpng or #proxmox and friends for an handful of VMs.

I was able to get two VMs to start.

To get there, I enabled SR-IOV in the server’s BIOS and rebooted.

I looked through every #BIOS setting that wasn’t enabled to find it. Luckily, the #Dell server BIOS has helpful information about each setting. A quick search uncovered the term mentioned in #XCPng docs at https://xcp-ng.org/docs/compute.html#vgpu. #homelab

After updating #BIOS and #iDRAC and other firmware to the latest on my #Dell server, #XCPng 8.2.1 won’t start any virtual machines. The VMs previously ran just fine. The console now claims, “failed: hvm is required for this operation.” The server CPUs support VT-x and it is enabled in the BIOS.

This is an extremely frustrating #homelab experience.

I replaced #VMware #ESXi with #XCPng in my #homelab. It’s been a bit rocky. The XCP-ng part seems fine. The #XenOrchestra part has given me all sorts of fits. It kept losing the connection to the underlying host, a Dell PowerEdge server, until I switched to the “latest” channel for updates and installed a newer version. (The workaround was to disconnect/reconnect.) I still get some occasional errors and problems. I can’t restart one of my VMs with XOA. I can’t type when trying to create a tag.

So #xcpng feels more like VMware than proxmox. It was a difficult install process for my H3 needed to use an alpha version of their software to get it to install. Then boot the thing in safe mode cause it just wouldn't boot. You also need a management server be productive with it. This is meant for clusters of hosts not really for the #homelab gang! At least it feels that way.

Well I got further with #xcpng got it installed but still seems like there's some sort of video driver problems. I have to boot it in safe mode for it to run! After an hour of pain! I still want to give it's it's fair shake. If I just don't feel a difference. I'm ganna go back to #proxmox . It's definitely giving me VMware needs to run on some specific hardware type vibes. Looks it too.

Already off to a great start with #xcpng shit won't boot on the #h3. Seems like there might be some eufi problem and need to try a new iso! I also tried it In safe mode and that shit just took 30 minutes just to fail. I see why #proxmox is popular! That shit just works

#vyos has taken it's last kernel panic! On #lxd at least. Spending the morning trying to rebuild this little thing with #xcpng. I should spent the time automating the router 😅, it's like the 3rd time I'm at it . This should take me forever because I'm learning yet another platform! This is #homelab! Shut up and just do it!!

Ahh fuck!! #Vyos jumped out the window again!! #lxd!! You outta there!! To be honest I couldn't troubleshoot a kernel panic even if I wanted to. So I'm ganna give #xcpng a shot!

#100daysofhomelab - my version - Day 10 & 11. Yesterday was mainly work for the day job but in my homelab testing bcp & sqlcmd based scripts for copying data from DBs.
Today I've been trying to setup a HP server with #xcpng but it won't recognise the drives in XCP-NG and the RAID setup option has disappeared. I have a feeling this will take ages to fix.

Tried to re-write intelligent provisioning which it has also lost but complaining about NVRAM 🤬

I used to run QubesOS somewhere around 3.0 RC1 back in 2015. I was impressed with how well it worked out of the box for a major OS project such as this. The only thing that didn't work on my machine at that time was automatic suspend/resume within the netvm.

I loved what @rootkovska was proposing with security by isolation, a much needed step in the right direction for secure systems.

Fast forward to today and the supported hardware has expanded significantly and many problems have been solved in the 4.1 release. The community has also expended and I saw @micahflee's HOPE talk in 2018: "Qubes OS: The Operating System That Can Protect You Even If You Get Hacked"

The other day I suggested to someone that they try #Proxmox and someone countered with #XCP-Ng #xcpng and it did get me wondering, can anyone tell me why I should consider it over Proxmox?
