I was looking for some hardware to do a test with #Xen on #FreeBSD and #NetBSD. I found some unused stuff, but all of them want to boot with #UEFI, which is not supported on either FreeBSD or NetBSD. Oh well, the search continues...

You know, I think the #OpenBSD and #QubesOS folks have the right idea regarding hyperthreading.

The last few major hardware vulnerabilities all had it as a pretty central part of exploitation.

Is the slight gain in performance worth the #security tradeoff? I don't think so.

For Qubes, it's possible to ensure only threads from the same #Xen VM/trust-domain run collocated on a core, but for more conventional OSes, that's much harder to guarantee.

New stable & longterm #Linux #kernel with mitigations for the #AMD #INCEPTION vulnerability aka CVE-2023-20569, the #Intel #Downfall[2] vulnerability aka CVE-2022-40982, and the #Xen netback buffer overflow[3] are now on https://kernel.org.

Today was the day that I found the line in the #Xen #Hypervisor docs which explains how to get decent I/O performance in guest OS's which are I/O heavy (e.g. CI servers).

TLDR; sudo xl sched-credit2 -d Domain-0 -w 512

It's only slightly annoying that the Xen docs are incorrect (they refer to the old schedule credit system which isn't the default any more), and their Wiki seems to not allow account creation to submit an edit.

Selbst das virtualisierte #Windows läuft gefühlt schneller als das ein nativ Installiertes. Gefühlte Wahrheit, selbstverständlich...
Wenn ich hier sitze mit #debian und mäßig anspruchsvolle Sachen tu, steht der Lüfter meines Notebooks. Der Lüfter läuft durch, wenn ich #Sinnlos boote und ihn mit minimaler Arbeit beschicke (LibreOffice oder sowas).

#AMD Continues Work On Enhancing #GPU Support With #Xen #Virtualization
AMD posted patches as part of their start for adding #VirtIO GPU and passthrough GPU support for Xen. AMD has been working on this both for #HVM on #DomU and #PVH on Dom0 modes. Other patches from AMD for enhancing graphics support when making use of Xen, but again without a clear motivation why especially considering the dominance of KVM and less industry interest around Xen in more recent years.

@qbi Wo es vom Plattenplatz vertretbar ist grundsaetzlich *auch* VM images, e.g. unter @QubesOS, #Xen, etc., weil das oft schneller wiederherzustellen ist. Ansonsten #duplicity fuer die Daten und #Ansible um die Maschine wieder zu konfigurieren. Auf'm Handy ist mir egal, ich lebe #Datensparsam, was nicht eh' in #git liegt kann auch weg ;-)
