I learned #vi in 1987 on a 286 #xenix PC. I never forgot the key bindings nor how useful it was.

Often forgotten by people is the period in between. The people who cloned Linux and the (GNU) "shell" around it often worked from samizdat doco about 1970s Unix.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, there were a whole bunch of commercial #Unix flavours: #Xenix, HP/UX, #AIX, #SunOS, #Ultrix, OSF/1, AT&T System 3, AT&T System 5, ...

#Illumos, which came from #Solaris, which came from SunOS, is actually still around.

Since you mention Xenix, here's a couple of interesting historical tidbits:

One of the ironies of history is that #MMDF, which SCO Xenix had instead of #Sendmail, would have been far more popular had it been around just a decade later.

It's also interesting that if one is writing stuff for a virtual terminal on FreeBSD, one still has traces of Xenix around. The keymap(5) file format is much the same as the #Xenix one.

I came across my old install disks for an early version of Unix I ran from ISC.
This was back in 1992. #linux had not been out long but I recall it wasn’t much more than a kernel and handful of shell utils.
Prior to this I ran SCO Xenix on a 286 PC. I eventually managed to get a TinyMUD running on ISC and later on Linux. #homelab #xenix

What I was thinking of was something more along the lines of taking the UNIX code/philosophy, and gradually transmogrifying it into some twisted Windows/MacOS clone to the point that the original beauty of Unix is badly defaced.

Because... as much as I *do* love Linux for all the awesome things it brings to the table, that *is* how it looks a lot of the time.

Well another #trs80 Big Tandy. This one arrived with its 68000 cards missing so was basically a white Model 2. Well it's now a 16A and also has a working Type 2 hard drive card passing diagnostics. Next step is to test it with a #DREM and then do the CPU mod for Burst Mode to allow it to boot #xenix

I was looking through more classic Mac development stuff and happened to find that, apparently, there was a version of #Xenix for #AppleLisa?! Shocking, considering how little software there was in general.

Would love to see the Xenix source code turn up one day. It's an interesting artifact of Microsoft's attempts to capitalize on Unix.
