Guess what? A new possibly very long thread, this time about Athena, my next main #workstation as a successor to Sargo (the current Mac Pro 5,1 setup) based around the #Lenovo #ThinkStation P500. I already bought a low spec P500 and an 18-core #Xeon E5-2699 v3 CPU upgrade; later on I'll get 64 GB of DDR4 ECC memory, a so called "Flex M.2 Adapter" for the special Flex slot on the motherboard and maybe an additional GPU alongside my new Radeon Pro W5700 for KVM's and PCI passthrough.

From this testing, AMD EPYC Milan easily led over Intel Ice Lake when it came to delivering the best performance-per-Watt. However, given all of my past testing of EPYC Milan(X) that should hardly be a surprise. AMD also generally "takes the cake" when it comes to the best value / performance-per-dollar.

Welcome Taeyeon to my #homelab
She will serve as the new main #server in my network hosting #pfsense #homeassistant and #mastodon amongst others on a #proxmox backbone.
She's a slightly used #dell #poweredge #R340 with a 12 core #xeon E-2136, 64GB of RAM and about 8TB of #SSD storage. Despite being much smaller than the #R520 she's replacing she's way more performant at a fraction of the power usage.
I'm particularly proud of the #cablemanagement where each colour is its own #vlan

對於某些比較老舊的軟體
#Intel 大小核心的調度還不算很完善呀...
看更新完會不會好一點點
其實早在評測 i7-12700 cpu 時
就已經發現比較有年紀的軟體
即使是燒機或是高負載的工作
Intel 都會把他調度給效率核心（E-core) 去執行
而且目前好像除了主動禁用 E-core 以外
沒有什麼可以調整的空間
雖然在遊戲市場或是“新軟體評測”上
Intel 能透過大量 E-core 去創造比較好的效能
但已經兩年多過去了
Allen 還是覺得在 PC 端這個策略沒有想像中好
畢竟一些老軟體/開源軟體可能需要很多的時間
才有辦法提供對應的最佳化
其實回頭看到伺服器級的策略就一目了然
Intel 並不打算用混合配置的方式在製作 #Xeon
而是用效能核心（P-core) 與效率核心做出不同的核心配置
提供更高單核效能或是更高核心數的不同選項

而其測試分數常常成為我們茶餘飯後的話題
就有如現在 #EPYC 或是 Xeon 的評測一樣
(不過 #E7 系列就鮮少出現就是)

在當時 4C8T 就已經是旗艦配置的狀態下
12C24T的橫空出世
以及 30MB 的 L3 Cache
當時 Allen 最常跟朋友開玩笑說： 30MB 耶 可以裝 OS 了吧XD
殊不知十年後的今天
Allen 的 PC L3 Cache 就有惹 25MB
而 12C 也開始落入平常百姓家

It's the most powerful CPU this machine accepts, with four hyperthreaded cores (8 threads).
But it has a lower TDP than the i3 that it replaces !

Just watched the latest video from #LTT on #YouTube and I have to say that #Intel really dropped the ball on their latest #Xeon compared to #AMD #Epyc CPUS. Not that it matters to me, I'd never afford to buy either of them =P 12K USD for the Epyc.. sheize!
