Happy #Newstodon Friday, a day when we highlight great publications on the #Fediverse and some of our most important stories.
This week, Sneha Khedkar looks at why India is uniquely bad at treating women's health issues such as endometriosis, despite existing gender healthcare gaps in other countries like the U.S.:

NEW: India ranked dead last in the Health and Survival subindex for the 2022 World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report. Nobody feels this contrast more than Indian female expats.
Sneha Khedkar talks to one of them to understand how so:

I was asked by
the Serve-Learn-Sustain Center at Georgia Tech to briefly make a case for why my reporting for
@thexylom on "Cop City" matters. I gained a lot of my science writing skills through my involvement with the Center, and it's interesting to see how higher ed is responding:

Congrats to TWO of our very own Gina Errico and Rose Schnabel for being named AAAS Mass Media Fellows! This is the FOURTH straight year one or more of our writers have been selected. (We think it might be a record ✌)
Last year, Rose (right) wrote an analysis piece for us about how the rhetoric used by newsrooms surrounding #COVID19 has evolved as the pandemic progressed. Being fluent in Spanish, we are not surprised that Rose landed at El Nuevo Día.

BREAKING: Today (April 6th), the Dekalb County Department has issued an indefinite stop work order for the "Cop City" site.
Previously, Editor-in-Chief @alexip718 fact-checked the City of Atlanta's January 31st claim that "the plans and development of the Public Safety Training Center strictly adhere to all federal, state, and local environmental standards" as FALSE. The City of Atlanta has since deleted the press release in early March.

Her family is not alone. In Costa Rica, there are around 50,000 individually owned coffee farms, 90% of which are on less than five hectares (13 acres) of land. Each farm is being faced with multiple crises at once, including rapid changes in temperature and rainfall, an increase in fungal and insect pests, coupled with a rise in the cost of pesticides/fertilizers. But today, Diana’s family is facing a crisis. “Now I hear my parents discussing the decrease in [coffee] yields and issues with fungal pathogens that may force them to give up on the farm and it breaks my heart.” (/3)

NEW: While working on her master’s thesis in forests by coffee plantations in Costa Rica, Gina Errico took the opportunity to talk to local farmers and foresters about the issues they are facing and learn how they are trying to combat these problems.

NEW: Last August, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens told The New Yorker's Charles Bethea that "It's just not a forest where ['Cop City'] is right now."
Alex Edwards (@nonmodernist) knows that the Mayor is wrong. She's just walked Weelaunee Forest.

Today, the F.D.A. made Narcan, an overdose-reversing nasal spray, an over-the-counter drug.
We've been covering the development since last year when Jennifer Clare Ball reported from Chicago. @alexip718 made an interactive map of Narcan dispensaries in IL:

Heading to Houston now to rep @thexylom at ComSciCon, hosted by Rice University! Will speak about how science writing can bring communities together

Last year, our alum Hanna Webster wrote for us about "Heat Waves, Wildfires, and Downpours: San Diego is Changing and Climate Change is One Culprit".
This week, she is writing above-the-fold stories about the East Palestine, Ohio Train Derailment for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the largest newspaper in the region.
This is how we grow science with words.

Today, two F.D.A. committees unanimously voted to recommend that Narcan, an overdose-reversing nasal spray, be made an over-the-counter drug.
