“Nowadays, people working on XFS seem to spend most of their time on distro kernel backports and dealing with AI-generated corner case bug reports that aren’t user reports. Reviewing has become a nightmare of sifting through under-documented kernel code trying to decide if this new feature won’t break all the other features..."
Six Years In, Maintainer Darrick Wong Says 'Goodbye' to XFS

#mastoaiuto #linix ma avere una sorta di roolback con snapshot su #arch linux con #XFS è possibile? Oppure mi tocca per forza mettere #btrfs ?

#XFS #Linux #FileSystem Maintainer #DarrickWong Stepping Down
Darrick nominated #ChandanBabu of #Oracle to handle release management for XFS while others need to step up to handle bugs, testing lead, community management, and maintaining the LTS kernel support for XFS.

` I do not choose to continue as maintainer.
My final act as maintainer is to write down every thing […] There are too many demands placed on the maintainer, and the only way to fix this […]
[…] concludes with my nomination for a new release manager […] Testing and triage; community management; and LTS maintenance are all open positions.
This is an extraordinary way to destroy everything. Enjoy! […] `
For the record: "xfs_repair" didn't find a sufficient amount of superblocks, after i carelessly/tiredly shrunk the underlying #ZFS sparse volume - see previous thread(s).
#XFS can't shrink, and having a dm-crypt layer in between didn't exactly help.
I've lost a few files - nothing dramatic, a few nice-to-have items - hasn't been a professional production machine.😅
I'm sure, the actual data still existed, but letting testdisk/photorec scrub an ~750gig volume didn't seem like worth the effort.
Wtf.
It's chewing through the drives (and also acts as a heater, that thing is _warm_). I forgot to specify the chunk size, so I hope that the defaults are good enough for me to not notice.
I also went with simple `mdadm` RAID1 with #XFS on top, I didn't feel confident for LVM.

Good morning!
Today, i'll learn how powerful exactly the xfs_repair utility is.
Why? Well, being to tired to admin turned out worse than being too drunk. 10 hours ago, i've changed the size of a thinly provisioned #ZFS zvol from 100T to 2T, and back. Guess what's inside that zvol - exactly, an #XFS, beneath a dm-crypt layer for good measure.
Alas, my most recent snapshot is 2 weeks old. 😱
Yeah, setting up automatic snapshots just got bumped up to top priority - hourly, daily, weekly! 😅
#XFS doesn't support shrinking - i did it anyway, on the boot mirror of my #Ubuntu server.
1st: backup
2nd: backup again using xfsdump
3rd: unmount, nuke md-mirror, create new md-mirror, and mkfs.xfs
4th: mount and xfsrestore
5th: fix fstab, take a photo of blkid and reboot
6th: learn how to use the grub shell and boot into Ubuntu
7th: dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64 in order to fix grub, then update-initramfs -ukall
8th: reboot again to make sure it's actually fixed
Q'Pla! 🖖 😅 🍻
Howdy 'y'all out there..
I have written a post on #KoFI explaining the current situation with #XFS & #Grub, including our in-house fix, only applies to #XeroLinux and its spins, do not try this on anything else.. #FOSS #Linux https://ko-fi.com/post/Grub-issue-its-solution-for-now-D1D7N8JAT

People frequently say they don’t want #ZFS on their workstation because it’s a server FS. But what’s the best workstation FS? #UFS, #Ext4, #HAMMER, #Btrfs, #XFS? What’s the going benchmark workload look like? What subjective aspects matter too? (And yes, I know about damned lies of https://fsbench.filesystems.org/)
