I'm excited to see making some news! There is so much around (and before that it was ) but I think that for most working in industry the development of algorithms (like and ) are the real revolution and will have a much more long lived impact on our work.

Machine Learning with or gets better with optimisation and a tool like is there to help. Also, you can integrate the results with - a walkthrough with some code (medium.com/p/dcf0efdc8ddf)

A write-up with similar code to the one in the video above titled, "Using XGBoost with Tidymodels", for quicker skimming of the code. the video itself is still excellent because of the commentary and explanation.

After all these years of seeing XGBoost being used, I'm finally playing around with it. This video here has been an excellent working tutorial on how to use it, from setup to hyperparameter tuning. I'm enjoying the tidymodels framework thus far too.

Has anyone worked with ? How do I make sure integer categories as treated as categories and have no relationship?

Everything on the internet mentions label or binary encoding, but they are already integers, that would be massive overkill considering there are multiple rows with thousands of categories.

It seems I set:
enable_categorical=True
And make the fields categories. So far no cigar.

I have built nice in my {healthyR.ai} to address doing xgboost on the fly without having to mess around to much. It does use the which I think is nice.

Here is a link to the post (should finish deploying it - failed multiple time already) spsanderson.com/steveondata/po

XGBoost can handle arithmetic really well unless the interaction is very strong

Then it’s useful to explicitly add it

I wrote an article testing its limits after discussing with a teammate

You can get to 95% of the performance of a huge ensemble in a tabular dataset by simply running bayesian optimization with 30 steps with a GBM-like model

Set the maximum number of trees you can

Optimize learning rate, max depth, subsample, colsample and minimum samples per leaf

@JadeMasterMath all machine learning? Or just ;)

Could be your joking, but as I make my living with solving problems, I can say that a fair amount would be unsolvable with

lesson of the day: Working with a model, I got no traction cross-validating hyperparameters like tree depth and number; but different evaluation metrics (e.g. SMSE vs. MAE etc.) had a major impact. Have you tried this?

IMHO get all the press because they do sexy human jobs like seeing and processing language. But in the business world of tabular data, is where the real revolution is happening!

Question for folks:

I want to predict a variable constrained to [0,1]. In a statistical setting I'd use zero-one inflated beta regression.

But because I care about prediction over inference, and don't have strong priors about the important interactions, I want to use a GBM.

Will reg:logistic constrain predictions accordingly?
