And the worst thing is that this #xianxia #anime had some really cool concepts and clever jokes, but the writing completely failed at having any verisimilitude whatsoever. The plot's stakes were inconsistent and the characters' abilities were poorly exposited. The longer I watched, the more I felt that I didn't need to worry about anyone on screen
Four sessions ago, we collected the evidence and the suspects before the Empress Dowager (emperor is a mommas boy. His mom is the one who gets shit done) and explained the whole plot. However, when my restraints failed the situation began to escalate. Lady Konflict managed to flee, summoning the local legion of the army to murder the other children herself. I beat Consort Lilled to death with the snake painting. A fun time was had by all

I feel compelled to tell you all about how badly our #dnd campaign is going. Just when we think it can't possibly get worse, it does.
Background info: we are in a setting heavily inspired by Han dynasty China mixed with heian period japan. Our party is an official body of advisors formed to investigate the murders in the imperial harem. Over 50 children were alive before we arrived. 12 remain.

My latest book review is up: Guardian: Zhen Hun vol 1 by Priest. Urban fantasy m/m romance set in modern China, with some scary bits and great characters.

Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms is what got me back into #CDramas. Youtube recommended a video with the show's theme song, and I was like, hmm, what is this? Watched a few eps, then I was 😍
In this #Cdrama the hero (Ye hua) screwed up so royally that the heroine (Bai Qian) totally gave up on the relationship in the most dramatic way. Ye Hua tries to win her back & her love returns but after A LOT OF PAIN.
Only drama that has made me shed tears. Ever.

My latest review is up: Thousand Autumns vol 2 by Meng Xi Shi.
The trials and tribulations of Shen Qiao continue. The second volume is stronger than the first and doesn't end with a cliffhanger. But a great love story it isn't. Yet.

Instead of watching the rest of #BackFromTheBrink I decided to read this for closure. Lawd I am glad I didn't waste my time 😂
I guess I am not a fan of romance, especially in #xianxia settings. I prefer mostly serious classic #wuxia and high production quality & acting is very important or I won't even watch.

#LoveYouSevenTimes sounds like a show that will drive me insane. And not in a good way 🤣
It is the classic #XianXia love plot of "you are doomed to reincarnate and live 7 tragic love affairs" and these things drive me crazy.
The visuals though.
Still, after the writing, production and acting excellence of #MysteriousLotusCasebook, it is going to be hard to transition to this idol drama. MLC made me realise how much I miss brotherhood #Wuxia. They are too rare.

My latest review is up: Stars of Chaos Vol. 1 by Priest. A Chinese take on steampunk, with a slow-build BL romance. https://susannashore.blogspot.com/2023/07/stars-of-chaos-sha-po-lang-vol-1-by.html
@AnnaAnthro I love #xianxia but it does take a serious time commitment- on the other hand, that’s 40 hours of Xiao Zhan to watch 😍😂
@MarthaCrimson #wuxia usually is no or low magic so I’d not use “cultivator” there because that’s a specific term used for xiushi iirc. Once you head into cultivator territory I’d automatically switch genre to #xianxia.
@MarthaCrimson If you read #xianxia in Chinese fic, you'll see that some of it centers around what the powers that be and rules that are consider "good" and "acceptable" for purposes of ascension.
Some go the pure "if you grind, you deserve to win" route. Some choose to say that the tiandao doesn't allow evil-doers to ascend to godhood.
It's an exploration of routes to power and the privileges/duties of power.
@MarthaCrimson There shouldn't be a glossing over the "xia" in either genre.
That's a whole mindset re: chivalry, justice, etc, that drives the genre. It's not just fancy martial arts and people doing cool things.
With #xianxia, some themes tend to go around the myth of meritocracy, the tipping of resources to "the deserving talented", who gets classed as "xiushi" versus "the exploited", and often worldviews of who gets to ascend.
@MarthaCrimson
#wuxia usually has no or little magic/fantasy elements, aside from y'know, the incredible qi type power things and people literally walking on water...
The difference there that it's framed as physical ability and it's always framed within "present life" terms.
#xianxia involves magic, ascension to celestial status/godhood, and often has themes around reincarnation, what it means to be immortal.
Also, if you are into #danmei, #BL, #xianxia
