24: ‘Tis the Damn Season - Taylor Swift. This is another song about going back home for Christmas and thinking about the love that got away and the life that might have been. The line about leaving “the warmest bed I’ve ever known” is lovely and heartbreaking all at the same time. Season’s greetings to you all. ‘Tis the Damn Season indeed. Playlist to follow….

23: Joy - Tracey Thorn. I think “Tinsel & Lights” is my favourite seasonal album of them all, stacked full of lovely covers and splendid originals. Loads of the songs on this list also feature there. Joy is an anthem to love, friendship and finding a spark of hope at the darkest time of the year. I adore it with all my heart and it always makes me mist up a little. Downbeat and lovely.

22: River - Joni Mitchell. Another song that isn’t explicitly seasonal, but is made so by the haunting refrain of “jingle bells” played on the piano throughout. Much covered, but not surprisingly (as it’s a deeply personal song), Joni does it the best. It’s a heartbreaker, but almost painfully lovely.

21: When the Thames Froze - Smith & Burrows. Funny Looking Angels is something of an overlooked gem of an album & this song is just about perfect. Singing about protest & awful governments & people sleeping on the streets is also sadly as relevant today as it was a decade ago. It always makes me well up a little too. I keep saying I’ll try to do this as a choir solo. Maybe one day.

20: So Much Wine - Phoebe Bridgers. Another song from 2022. This is a cover of a song by the Handsome Family.
“There’s only so much wine
That you can drink in one life
And it will never be enough
To save you from the bottom of your glass”
Does it get any more Christmas-y than that?

19: Goodbye England (covered in snow) - Laura Marling. Another winter mood. Not about Christmas, but a beautiful song about England in winter. You get a lot of Jesus at this time of year, and it’s nice to escape that for a bit. I also appreciate the different tone. You don’t need to put sleigh bells on everything.

18: White Winter Hymnal - The Fleet Foxes
Not so much a seasonal song as a seasonal mood, this song always sounds to me like a midwinter medieval madrigal. Such simple lyrics and yet somehow so threatening. Lush. Mmm. Jingle bells. Great video too.

17: Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis - Tom Waits. Right from that incredible first line, “Charlie, I’m pregnant….”, this song takes you on a journey like very few other songs, nevermind Christmas ones. Merry Christmas! https://youtu.be/mxVo5mjK4eg

16: I Got My Love to Keep Me Warm - Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Obviously not a niche choice, but why we keep hearing the likes of Mistletoe & Wine when we could be hearing belters like this is entirely beyond me. Such joy. #xmas #playlist #music

15: I Want to Come Home for Christmas - Marvin Gaye. if you want a real Vietnam heartbreaker, then this was inspired by the yellow ribbons tied around trees for POWs in that war. The song itself wasn’t released until 18 years after it was originally recorded and 6 years after Gaye’s own death. I also love “Purple Snowflakes” by Gaye and that also features on the playlist. As always, Gaye really, really feels every note. https://youtu.be/cWPbZLMec60
Hello my fellow Mastodonions. I have yet another of my 1-man a cappella quartet Christmas videos from 2020 that I made to combat the depression of not being able to sing with my usual groups. This is my rendition of White Christmas. I hope you enjoy it. And of course, if xmas isn't your thing, I wish you a merry all of the things! https://youtu.be/4uQV7UpTSgs

14: I Don’t Intend to Spend Christmas Without You - Claudine Longet. Because it’s important that every playlist has at least one song that is preposterously, seductively French. Released in 1967 and written by Margo Guryan, the song has also been recently covered by Saint Etienne. Longet is still alive and has led quite the life (including marriage to Andy Williams and an accidental homicide conviction). Enjoy!
My favourite #XmasSong is probably Fairytale of New York by the Pogues - but wait... I'm betting you've likely never heard this bluesy jazzy New Orleans crossed with 40s swing version of Fairy Tale of New York by the Swinging Little Big Band - seriously good.

13: Winter - Tori Amos. A song about childhood and about your father making you feel safe and telling you to believe in yourself. Lovely. Also, mittens. Who doesn’t like mittens? Tori has done loads of seasonal songs (Midwinter Graces is an album full of them), but this is my favourite. https://youtu.be/_PDlGUdDF8Y

12: Santa Claus is Coming to Town - Joseph Spence. A Bahamian guitar legend attempts a Christmas classic when he seems to have, at best, only a passing acquaintance with the lyrics and generally sounds like nothing less than a drunken muppet character. Utterly joyful. It just wouldn’t be Christmas without good ol’Sandy Claw.

11: Hard Candy Christmas - Dolly Parton. Hardly obscure, but Saint Dolly really delivers the goods here with another downbeat classic. Hat tip to the outstanding cover by Tracey Thorn on her entirely wonderful “Tinsel and Lights” album (which features several other covers of songs appearing on this list). Now let’s all just get drunk on apple wine.
