YaCy is free software, under the terms of the GPL 2.0, that provides a decentralized search engine. It runs on a peer-to-peer network.

Generally I've used DuckDuckGo, but this sounds even more interesting.

It may turn out to be a dud (occasionally these things are), but, I'll try it out to see.

I also heard @cccfr talking about it lately.

I think what has changed since the beginning of the project is: You don't have these masses of always on - always connected desktop PCs with large hard disks everywhere to run services like YaCy in the background. You rather have mobile devices with WiFi, strict energy settings and OTOH cloud services with defined capabilities (either storage, or computing).

@chrisisgr8 I would like the solution looking like #Yacy, but while that’s already useful, its main usecase for me (decentralized web search) seems to not have seen that much attention in the past years.

@orbiterlab am I wrong on that? (it looks like Yacy steered into the direction of intranet search and search for individual websites, though it does also work as www-wide decentralized search engine)

#SETI? Das ist ja interessant, dieses Programm gibt es noch? Ich hatte das mal in den frühen 2000er auf dem PC laufen. Mittlerweile wäre mir, bei den aktuellen Energiepreisen, die gespendete Rechenleistung zu teuer. Eine gemeinschaftliche Suchmaschine wie #YaCy ist da genügsamer und erfüllt dabei einen tatsächlichen Nutzen.

10 years ago today #YaCy was nominated for the Zedler Price (category "External Knowledge Project of the Year") which was awarded by @wikimediaDE and I had the honour of joining @orbiterlab on stage to represent the project. The Invisible Internet Protocol has great tools that don't require javascript, from #translation tools to a #StackOverflow mirror (http://stackoverflow.i2p) to search services like #Metager, #Yacy and #SearXNG and more. There's little reason to leave I2P, with #git repos, #torrenting and #video, to boot.

Innovate while being #anonymous — avoid being targetted for your #work.

Der Speicherplatz auf meiner SSD neigt sich dem Ende des vertretbaren. Ich musst #YaCy kurzerhand ausbremsen. Und werde mich demnächst etwas genauer mit der Konfiguration auseinander setzen. Danach werde ich ein Upgrade in Betracht ziehen.
