Interesting thoughts. I often see, hear about and feel the conflict between nature and our urban environments…and the intersection (tree-wise) are our ornamental plantings and the practice of #bonsai.

It’s an inherent contradiction that some see as cruel or destruction of nature for personal satisfaction.

I think there is an owed responsibility to the forests and the #environment (non-forested) to NOT collect #trees for bonsai (#Yamadori) that are rare, ancient or occupy unique habitats. Climbing to the mountains to pull a tree from a crag should be considered heresy, no matter how special a tree would be as a piece of art.

The responsible bonsai movement should emphasize the ethical procurement of trees…from nursery stock, from areas that will not support them (roadway shoulders that will be cleared periodically) or grown from seedlings/seeds collected.

In this way, the tree becomes inspiration to protect nature, rather than harvest it.
