Today we walked around #Yanaka, a part of #Tokyo near Nippori which has mostly kept it’s old world Tokyo vibe and visited the Asakura sculpture museum which is housed in Asakura Fumio’s old studio and residence. A grand concrete building in the front housing his studio (with an electric lift built in the 1930’s for his sculpting work), and a typical Japanese wooden house as the residence, with the most serene courtyard garden with trees and a pond.

Yanaka, Tokyo has many faces. This slope has always been one of my favorites, since I first visited 20 years ago. There used to be a number of abandoned houses along the way but young entrepreneurs came in and refurbished several of them and turned them into cafes and shops. It’s really nice to see the area thriving now #japan #tokyo #downtown #yanaka #photography

This old wall in Yanaka (谷中), #tokyo dates back over 200 years and is a rarity in that it’s built from mortar and old roof tiles from temples. The #yanaka area is renowned for the number and variety of temples it has, many of which were constructed as it lies to the northeast of the imperial palace and Edo Castle.
At end of the Shogunate it was the site of the Ueno War, and more temples were made to pray for the fallen souls who died there.
