#Corruption in Ukraine, as bad and brazen as it was under #Yanukovich, certainly didn't start with him, as #Mylovanov than later implicitly admits by mentioning the patrol #police. But the success fighting it so far - after a stuttering start - is impressive and maybe a bit underreported.

I'd forgotten a lot of this! When people start claiming that Ukraine's protests in 2004 and 2013 were caused by other countries (CIA backed coup and all that nonsense), they are failing to factor in how pissed off the average Ukrainian was with the hideous amounts of corruption and fraud. Yes, Ukraine still has issues in this area, but nowhere close to Yanukovich and friends.

I am also still amazed at how long the media stuck with Kiev over Kyiv because they found it, "confusing".

The #IMF lent money to #Ukraine in 2015 with the assumption that the war in Donbass did not exceed the current level of violence. The war was not over. The US and #Europe just pretended it was not happening:

"Lagarde implied this money is not for continuing the war in the #Donbass, but counts on the February ceasefire becoming a permanent armistice. The EFF loan, she said, 'involves risks, notably those stemming from the conflict in the #east of the country.' "

The #loan was arranged by the IMF only six weeks after the coup against #Yanukovich. Six weeks.

Obs: Reconstruction, war efforts or similar expenses cannot be covered by IMF's loans.
