kusama
I made this picture some time ago. At the time it was reflecting something that filled my consciousness and that I could not express any other way. I think it shows something akin to what yayoi kusamas infinity nets do. There is a little opening in every cell, in every particle inside every tiny structure of life and also of consciousness. It's like a little mouth infinity speaks through. And if this mouth opens and some vibration comes through, all the structures begin to vibrate first the tiny and then the bigger ones and our world changes. We change. And if we are not flexible enough we will have chaos ( which we have ). And all the fear that is hunkered in the subconscious and the trauma that is remembered in the cells must vibrate with the opening. That's contributing to why we see a rising of vulnerability and mental illness. But it brings healing in the end.
It's just a different viewpoint that opens, when you put your system in a different frequency. A different, maybe spiritual space.
But I can't live in these boxes. Spiritual , mundane. They don't fit me.
I am just thankful that I did not experience the same amount of fear that yayoi kusama had, when trying to integrate this experience.
Words don't really express how it feels to integrate a "spiritual" viewpoint. I just know it's tied in with my hyperconnected and autistic brain. And it's a fine balance. Because it comes with a ton of energy. And makes you scramble for connection and reflection in the culture around you, so you can understand yourself. But in the end it gives me hope. I can use this perspective to broaden my mind and to see, that what we experience, this crisis, is part of something bigger. And that there is a positive life-force behind all that we fear being in our face at the present moment.
I can also use it too loose fear of death. I was a bit stunned when my mother died and I did not experience death as an end or a separation. I had a visceral sense of her moving on and everything being just fine. I think integrating these frequencies in which we see the underlying reality into our culture would help everyone. And reduce mental illness. The dominant culture tends to numb us to that. this experience comes with a great need for space and sensitivity that must be put into creating a good space for oneself. But that is a good thing. I can use that motivation to guide my way. It's all about interconnectedness in the end. Nets symbolize that. And we need that more than anything. I think we need our crazy artists, spiritual stargazers and neurodivergents to be a part of moving forward. Everyone needs that part of themselves.

kusama
does art make your tremble, does it make you laugh or cry? I just discovered an artist that does that to me. She ist also one of those artists that were clearly neurodivergent. She was diagnosed with OCD, but if you look at her art, you are being reminded at the posterchild autistic kids way to organize their toys (instead of playing with them like normal kids, like their parents think their supposed to..)
She calls it infinity nets and some of it is expressed with polka dots.
Well I certainly totally connect to the notion of me being a polka dot in an infinity net. Actually that is all I am trying to explain when I open my mouth it seems, speaking about autistic hyperempathy and not being separate and stuff flowing through me like through everything else and so forth...
I think it was innate to her like it is innate to me and to all these other women and men that do things that excite me and make me laugh and cry and make it worth while for me to be here and make me feel part of this human journey.
I will just boldly claim her as a fellow autistic woman, even though I cannot know. She's dead so, she can't object.. I just keep having this experience. I stumble over an artist that does this to me, that causes this earthquake of recognition of the familiar, of what I find so difficult to express, have never seen reflected to this day..and I check them out, and sure enough, they had all of these "strange" things going on that I would normally count as a strong hint towards autism, if it were someone in my vicinity. But women weren't diagnosed, functional people were seldom diagnosed and it doesn't matter, she is everything that I personally connect with the term autism or what the term autism gave me a word to describe, which I couldn't fit into any other word. And of course she is so much more. Her name is yayoi kusama. Now recognized as the most important modern Japanese artist. And it took all of her incredible and compulsive determination to overcome the obstacles and become that. And like all of these outstanding women she had to deal with the crushing experience of being plagiarized by men that would then take the fame and the money, but she survived all of that and kept on manically producing art, and that art still causes people to have these experiences and so you can't say that she would be dead, she probably never will be.
And I am still trembling and just wanted to share this experience with you. I love her so much.

I guess I can write an introduction since I'm already in this server.
I studied history as an undergraduate and made a master course on archeology in Japan, with the Yayoi period as the research theme. My master thesis (and only research) was about Yayoi settlements in northern Kyushu.
After graduating ended up working completely outside academia but still occasionally follow news and read some papers and books.
Might post comments on books.

According to him, Japonic arrived in the Korean peninsula around 1500 BCE and was brought to the Japanese archipelago by the Yayoi at around 950 BCE. The language family associated with both Mumun and Yayoi culture is Japonic. Koreanic arrived later from Manchuria to the Korean peninsula at around 300 BCE and coexist with the descendants of the Japonic Mumun cultivators (or assimilated them).

For Season 2, "The Yayoi Period," I opted for Yayoi-specific goods, including a bronze bell and two crossed bronze swords. The bells did not function as ringing instruments, but were buried in the ground as part of some religious rituals which are now extinct.
