Perhaps the biggest blessing of the year was finding a place to call home that actually feels home-like. My roommates are delightful, we have lots in common, and get along well. There is a yard, chickens and cats and a dog. I am happy with where I live for the first time in a very long time.
Health: It's been up and down. Up: I'm stronger than I thought I was, my energy limits are higher than they were last year. Down: it takes me longer than ever to recover from a fatiguing event. My insomnia is legendary at this point. Up: mushrooms have been helpful with depression and food intolerances. Down: I'm increasingly unable to work for any period of time.
Professional: I give up. I can't work on the computer for longer than an hour or so before the pain is overwhelming. Working as a DSP was a mixed bag. It wore me out in a matter of weeks. The agency I worked for was actively unhelpful. I think I would have liked the work had I some sort of leadership and better pacing, but who knows. I applied for SSDI. I need to find a way to earn a reliable income without hurting myself. I don't know if that's possible.
Love-life: Zip zilch none nadda. It's honestly kind of nice. A lot less bullshit, that's for sure.
Hobbies: gaming as usual, some time digging in the yard, getting into growing mushrooms. (see: grow your own medicine). A little playing on the guitar. Not much energy for active hobbies.
Books: 28 books this year. Tamsyn Muir is the best author of the year by far, Gideon the Ninth hits harder on the third read than the first or second. Harrow makes some sort of sense on the second read. Nona was delightful. Looking forward to Alecto in 2023. This is How You Lose the TIme War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone was a delightfully unexpected gem. A Memory Called Empire was a late addition to the best of 2022, having technically been finished after New Year's 2023.
Movies: Kind of a lackluster year for me, no movies in the theater. Everything Everywhere All At Once solidly the year's best. Glass Onion, earns second place, but not as good as the first Knives Out.
TV wise: Severance and The Bear for stand-outs. Stranger Things, Peacemaker, The Boys, Strange New Worlds. Still waiting for AMC to not suck and show the entire season of Better Call Saul but how could it not be amazing? She-Hulk, but only for the ever delightful Tatiana Maslany. Andor had its moments. I wish the Song of Fire and Ice TV franchise would die loudly and gruesomely like one of its characters.
Music: Discovered Black Pumas this year. Listened to a lot of late 1960s/early 1970s. Funk was the genre of the year, p-funk, funk-rock. Detroit and Minneapolis sounds. Prince.
Food: saw Vivian Howard speak promoting This Will Make it Taste Good. Could not make it taste good this year. Underseasoned, oversalted, burnt, undercooked ... not a great year for cooking. Struggled a lot with disordered eating. Appetite and cooking ability both came back in December, thank goodness. Learned of Vishwesh Bhatt, a chef from Mississippi who was born and raised in Gujarat, India, and had my mind blown by what the man does to black eyed peas.
Overall: not a bad year, hope the trend of things getter better continues into 2023.
#YearEnd #2022
January I made plans to start a job in Raleigh and live in Durham
February was lining that up, getting transportation into place, packing things up
March was moving, and resting, and waiting
April was annoyance, having to pull out all the stops to get working, starting off angry and upset
May was trying to find a balance, struggling
June was realizing that balance couldn't be found without a lot of help, quitting
July was depression, feeling like a loser, trying to reclaim something
August was unexpected changes, an improvement in some ways, a retreat in others
September was
October was reevaluating, realizing that changes needed to be made
November was admitting hard truths, taking steps to make change
December was holidaze, feeling that perhaps things weren't eternally stuck, finding different ways

“By the time I got along to Liz Truss, she was gone”
The social phenomenology of the hard turn from the Liz who allowed us to pretend there was stability for seven decades to the Liz who unblinkered us to our world of churn in seven weeks is not to be overstated.

For this #yearEnd, a geographical #summary for wiki usage in 2022.
It is a bit surprising (for the editor here), but maybe not that weird after all: top two countries, #USA and #Poland, are the locations of two co-initiators of the wiki, so a natural promotion in this areas at workshops and other events is to be expected.
If you're interested in exact numbers, they're not good. ;) Just ask in DMs, you'll get them.
(Transparency is good / discomfort is natural). ;p
HNY!

‘Black Widow’ was my first post-Covid trip to the theater—at the Broadway Cinema in Eureka during a summer spent struggling to survive a cultist, dangerous workplace—and NWH was the first time I saw a group of strangers happy together in two years.
The Phase 4 slate is weak but those were two of my favorite trips to the #movies ever. The #MCU isn’t art but when it goes to the effort it is great entertainment.

As the year ends, I couldn't help but be happy and proud about my team's achievements this year. I established two collaborations one with Dr Sumer Chopra (Director Institute of Seismological Research - Gandhinagar, India) another with Dr Filippo Gatti (Université Paris-Saclay, France), won a grant to support my German-France collaboration together with Filippo. Published eight research articles which were featured three times in German newspapers and started teaching in Goethe University. I am very thankful to my colleagues, collaborators and family for being such a great support. I wish everyone a great and successful year ahead FIAS - Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies #research #team #collaboration #yearend #yearreview #academia
