Hey #yeg #Edmonton folks, I've been feeling like I am hearing sirens every 10 minutes. Especially when I go to bed, I notice that there's multiple sirens, honking, etc etc., all. The. Time.
So I did what any data wonk would do to see if confirmation bias or not, and went to https://data.edmonton.ca/browse?tags=police%20statistics.
Except those data sets all seem to be... from 2019. 🤔 Even when sorting by Recently Updated.
Anybody know what's up with that? Am I looking in the wrong place? Did the funding run out?
Three council members change position on police budget with new funding formula
An independent city staff can go the wrong way, too. #yeg city administration is currently headed up by a climate denier and a lot of the staff don't even live in the city proper. As a result, they are constantly undermining the current elected #yegCC and many of their progressive policies around climate, active transportation, etc.
In Episode 230 of Speaking Municipally, we dive into the EPS funding formula decision:

If your councilor voted against the police funding formula, they are likely getting some heavy criticism in their inboxes right now (heard from councilor staff). If you are happy your councilor voted against it, a short note to tell them so would likely be appreciated right now. #YEGCC
@Kellyshenanigans I.. I think you're right and there's nothing more recent. I was only able to find:
- the Household Travel Survey (2005, 2015) https://www.edmonton.ca/transportation/traffic_reports/travel-pattern-analysis
- this 2021 #yegcc report https://pub-edmonton.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=78597, which references the above results from 2015 (six years old even at the time...)
The 2019 Municipal Census https://www.edmonton.ca/city_government/facts_figures/municipal-census-results didn't ask about travel mode, and the 2021 Federal Census seems to have some data, but only on a provincial level. https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/index-eng.cfm

A library showcasing Tamil culture and an art project enlisting kids to decorate trashcans are among the community-based projects a city councillor’s office will be funding in Karhiio this year.
“I’ve learned that if you can put a question or decision out to the broader community and involve as many people as possible… typically, it generates a much stronger result than when only a few people make that decision,” Coun. Keren Tang told Taproot
Coun. Andrew Knack hopes Premier Danielle Smith’s directive to review the law governing local elections will address problems that arose from amendments made in 2020.

Edmontonians are clamouring to become electric-bike users, says Coun. Michael Janz, but they'll need more secure parking to keep their pricey pedals safe.

Hey! Friendly reminder that in 2022 the #edmontonpoliceservice got $4M in extra funding from #yeg that was earmarked specifically for #dashcams then randomly chose to spend it on other things. Then, instead of holding the police accountable for their deceit, the #EdmontonPoliceCommission was just like “welp, I guess we just trust them to make good choices with their money!” #acab #yegcc #abpoli

R.I.P. Mr. Gomberg.
Have we named anything like a park or bike lane after him yet?
