Something I'm finding interesting about learning #Yiddish with #Duolingo is I seem to be fixing difficult vocab by learning (oversimplified) etymology.
Difficult words that have stuck, as a result, are וועטשערע (vetshere, 'dinner', compare večer, Croatian for 'evening') and אײַנגעמאַכטס (ayngemakhts, 'jam', from אײַנ־ (ayn-) + מאַכן (makhn) meaning 'preserved' or, more literally 'made into a new state', cognate to German angemacht)
Only met him briefly a few times 15 years ago when I lived back east, but he's a great soul and a prodigious Yiddishist. His input is often behind so many of the best projects or original songs. #Yiddish #MichaelWex

Är jätteglad att detta nu är något som är tillgängligt för alla:
Nu finns böcker på jiddisch i Bläddra!
Nu kan alla läsa e-böcker på jiddisch i KB:s app Bläddra. Jiddisch har en lång historia i Europa och är ett av Sveriges fem nationella minoritetsspråk. Många av böckerna blir nu digitalt tillgängliga för första gången.

Star Trek and Yiddish: It's hilarious, studying Yiddish, to see that all the (cold, logical) traits Vulcans are supposed to have are the EXACT SAME traits ascribed to "Litvaks" (those who speak the dialect from around Lithuania) by "Galitzianers" (mostly Poland and Ukraine). Spock is a Litvak. But Nimoy was a Galitz. So what you're watching is a Galitz make fun of Litvaks. In space. #startrek #yiddish

came up in my fb memories, something I found on Jochre Yiddish OCR search in 2020 when looking for mentions of tsimbls (cimbaloms), the the boasting of a cantor from a satirical short story:
"My neck — a fiddle
my throat — a tsimbl
and I myself am a whole orchestra
When I pray, people fall like flies"

As a learner and lover of #Yiddish I have to say that being a teacher of it seems to be its own level of exhausting as so many people out there seem to have strong opinions about it that they absolutely want you to acknowledge and validate. Every time one of my former teachers (very mild mannered and open personality) posts about his upcoming course on FB there's always some comment of someone with an axe to grind about wanting to make sure he isn't teaching X or Y. 🤦♂️

It seems odd that #Esperanto is not listed in the UNESCO "Atlas of The World's Languages in Danger." The total speaker base of Esperanto approximates that of the native speaker base of #Yiddish (vulnerable).
#UNESCO's criteria is that the #language must have native speakers, which Esperanto clearly has.
Are there any good sources that document the number of native speakers? Alternatively, do any new religious movements use Esperanto as a liturgical language?

The #Yiddish singer Andrea Pancur has passed away unexpectedly. I never met her but she was a friend of many friends and an award winning artist in many ways. #RIP Look up her excellent Yiddish and #klezmer albums sometime including Alpenklezmer and other unique projects.

Certainly a niche scholarly topic about #klezmer but the Klezmer Institute put up a page about the project I've been working on a bit this year. It's still basically in the exploratory stage but it's aiming to develop an informed framework to try and publish some of the #JewishMusic found in the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine.
