Tens of thousands have taken to the streets across #Israel after Prime Minister #BenjaminNetanyahu fired his defense minister.

#YoavGallant had spoken out against controversial plans to overhaul the justice system.

The reforms include plans that would give the government full control over the committee which appoints judges.

They would also make it harder for courts to remove a leader deemed unfit for office.
Netanyahu faces an ongoing trial for corruption.

The defense minister, Yoav Gallant, said on Saturday night that the judicial overhaul posed a security threat to Israel. Military reservists have refused to sign up for duty and many more have threatened to do the same. Israel's consul general in New York resigned in protest.

Demonstrations are sweeping across Israel protesting an effort by the government to overhaul the country’s judicial system. In response to the firing, protestors swarmed the streets of Tel Aviv and started a highway bonfire. In Jerusalem, protestors broke through a police barricade outside of Netanyahu's home. Trade unions were calling for a general strike and universities were cancelling classes. Some 500,000 protestors took to the streets.
