Ketchup, not gravy on the top of pasties!

Sad to hear of the demise of Finlandia U. I had no connection to it other than growing up in the sort of place that would have a Suomi College (as it was previously named). Tough times for small schools. #yooper #HigherEd https://www.finlandia.edu/

I realized I never made an introduction post. 👋🏻 I’m a dad of twins! I was born a #yooper but moved down to the #twincities about 15 years ago now with my partner. I’ve been working in tech for a little over 10 years and have mostly been an #iosdev with a bit of dabbling in other bits of code 🙂. I always enjoyed #karaoke but it has been way too many years since I’ve done that. Glad to be here!

An Escanaba, Michigan paper mill shuts down temporarily after an outbreak of #blastomycosis One person is dead and 90+ are confirmed or suspected to have the disease, which originates in moist soil and rotting wood and leaves.
This Freep story is pretty thorough.
The mill is owned by #Billerud (a Swedish company) and recently received up to $200 million in state funding to modernize their product mix.

@kellogh mostly lost that accent when I went to college in Los Angeles but especially in my 20s I’d drift back into it when talking with my parents on the phone. Now I just hear it in a few tiny remnants: mostly place names (Houghton, Ontonagon) and the occasional “oh ja” #yooper
though I have to say I’m not sure why you’d settle there if you were planning to farm. 4 week growing season and the soil was 80% rocks 10% grubs #yooper
one of my favorite things about growing up in the #finnish diaspora was that the old farm houses, the ones a few miles out of town, all had a sauna out back. The sauna was built first, because it was small, quick to build, and easy to keep warm and clean, and then they’d live in it while building the house. Those old men and women in the nursing homes were badasses in their prime. #yooper
Stumbled across the Wikipedia article for St Urho’s Day and I’m oddly obsessed with this song there on the page—I’ve never seen it before, the day was “observed” where I grew up mostly by wearing purple—but that first line “Ooksi kooksi coolama vee” is translated from Finnglish as “1 2 3 4 5” and c’mon, it’s 1 2 3 5, that’s the joke. #yooper
@Michigander left MI 35 years ago but to this day most of the phone numbers I have memorized are 906 #yooper
#finnish #duolingo has been going on about pulla and it’s pretty clearly a bread of some kind and the word was even vaguely familiar but I only just now looked it up, and, oh. It’s that cardamom bread that we had every Saturday when we would go to Grandma and Grandpa Pikka’s for sauna. (Not my actual grandparents.) They almost certainly even called it pulla and I’d just (mostly) forgotten because I’m old and it’s been a million years. Guess I need to make some now #yooper
I have this video of moose migration in #sweden running as I work, and I’m struck again by how much it looks like where I grew up. Garrison Keillor had a bit about immigrants from #norway coming to the US and searching for a place just as miserable as the one they’d left; but I can see it, getting up into the lakes and the pines and saying this must be the place #yooper
I still have no words for falling in snow other than “took a digger” #yooper
The story I tell myself is that I lost my #yooper accent on a 48 hour Greyhound trip from Ironwood to El Monte 35 years ago but here I just said “holy wah” and it took me a few minutes to notice
