Snow Kissed Valley

This shot was taken as a winter storm was clearing the Yosemite Valley. The morning was cold and nasty but as the day moved on the sun started to break through.
On the left is El Capitan in it's proud glory. On the right you have Bridalveil Falls, The Three Brothers, and in the center back is Half Dome.

Late-afternoon spring haze mutes the contours of El Capitan, standing beyond groups of Yosemite Valley trees.

Near the end of my one-day (one very long day!) visit to Yosemite Valley the week before the Memorial Day crowds arrive, I visited a few spots in the lower Valley that are familiar to me. I went to this location mainly to photograph a flooded meadow that is surrounded by trees and from which granite cliffs are visible. These trees were silhouetted against the base of El Capitan, whose form and textures were muted by afternoon haze.

Spring dogwoods bloom under the canopy of a Yosemite Valley forest.

I am almost embarrassed to admit that I wasn’t thinking about dogwood blossoms when I made plans to visit Yosemite Valley the week before the Memorial Day holiday. I was so focused on going to photograph the effects of the historic snow melt runoff that I completed forgot that the dogwoods would still be in bloom. On the bright side, it was quite a wonderful surprise to get to the Valley and be reminded!

Gentle afternoon haze and soft spring light on forest and granite towers, Yosemite Valley.

The main visual aspect of Yosemite Valley, I think, is of massive, iconic formations in combinations that would be almost impossible to imagine: a dome sliced in half, waterfalls launching from the edges of cliffs thousands of feet above the valley, incomprehensibly massive expanses of granite, the u-shaped form with a carpet of trees at the bottom. But more subtle things characterize the place, too: the back-lit afternoon haze, cloud shadows moving ac ross the landscape, trees and meadows next to the river, and more.

Solitaire

This is one of my favorite color photographs that I have captured in Yosemite Valley. Yes you read that correctly, color photograph.
I woke to a good foot of snow covering the ground. Driving around the valley the low clouds blocked out most views so I worked with what I could see. The clouds blocked out a good deal of light to give this a soft black and white look. Bridalveil falls is large at 617 feet but is small when compared to nearbby Yosemite Falls.
Native Americans from the Ahwahneechee Tribe called this waterfall Pohono, meaning "The Spirit of the Puffing Wind. Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls at night from Cook's Meadow 27 January 2023. A7R f/2.8 15sec ISO6400 28mm. Even though a partial moon lighted part of the north valley wall and the meadow, it was still too dark for me to see the white falls. Bridal Veil

Bridal Veil Falls is one of the most accessible falls in Yosemite.
This image was captured in the morning as the sun was above and behind the waterfall giving the crest a nice little sparkle. The water has a nice clean white color that contrast nicely off of the dark granite walls.
