I watched the new Julia Louis-Dreyfus A24 film #YouHurtMyFeelings (dir. Nicole Holofcener) last night.

Unimpressive: It's very much sequestered in a White upper-middle-class cishet universe, and has many of the trappings of the rom-com (which I'm currently writing about elsewhere so maybe it's on my mind). It dances around comedy and drama but doesn't fully commit to either so that feels tepid, whereas maybe if it were a TV series it could really explore the dramedy range.

Interesting: Yet it's also doing some interesting stuff with disrupting the usual genre expectations and rewards. And it does a good job showing how all the characters are in some way unhappy or questioning their life choices, and struggling with impostor syndrome or insecurities of some kind. And the question at its center is a valid one: when you ask your closest person their opinion on your work, do really you want an honest answer?
