Karsh developed a distinctive portrait style...U[sing] artificial lighting in order to achieve dramatic effects...Karsh would conduct extensive research relating to the sitter, studying existing photographs and often meeting with them in advance.

The Magnani portrait is one of my all time favorite works of art.
