@nikkiana @college_physics @evan wow I’ve found my people! See (1) #Shuttlecraft https://hackers.town/@benbrown/109674294454044812 and mayyybe (2) my own frontend app #Yoyogi https://octodon.social/@22/109341060401995256, I’d love to see more bricolage in this space! Newsgroup readers 20 years ago were better than this!
Yay I knew the Google Reader-style interface was going to become a lot more popular that it is now, and voila! @benbrown’s #Shuttlecraft is a Fediverse server plus UI, the latter implementing that idea: https://hackers.town/@benbrown/109674294454044812
And! And, Ben is working on another crucial idea I sought to center in #Yoyogi, effortless threading! (Background on Yoyogi: https://octodon.social/@22/109341060401995256)
One pleasantly surprising thing about #Yoyogi. When you're looking at one person's toots, Yoyogi shows you their replies to toots they didn't boost and from people you don't follow—replies that the home timeline wouldn't have shown you.
Some folks, their replies are like the 95% of the iceberg under the water—these people are super-interesting in their replies, and I get a great sense of what they care about, beyond what they post/boost.
Folks complaining about Mastodon app showing the same toot boosted by multiple follows makes me appreciate the single-author-focused approach of #Yoyogi above (https://octodon.social/@22/109341060401995256), very much.
When I’m catching up with a single person I follow, it’s often a nice piece of information, “ah this person also appreciated that popular toot”. Seeing that boost becomes more about my relationship with and my knowledge of that person, and less about “GIVE ME MY FRESH CONTENT 🧟”.
Chron timelines are really not my cup of tea, and I’m starting to suspect that they’re suboptimal for more folks than just me—for example, people are discovering how much nicer it can be to hide boosts in your main timeline. I bet a sizable chunk (maybe 10%) of these folks might also really like single-author thread-centered readers like Yoyogi.
@splorp That’s the one! Some interesting completionist Mastodon UIs popping up, like @22’s #yoyogi https://fasiha.github.io/yoyogi/about
Just checked out and Hubbed #Yoyogi (ht @boris).
However I'm not sure I understand, @22, why in the view of @PabloPerezA's account it lists "3 hidden replies", when the thread has many more, all public?
https://fasiha.github.io/ by @22 is an interesting alternate #UI for #Mastodon that does not present toots as a #timeline, but rather as a separate view for each person you follow.
Each view shows a set of columns, where each column is a separate #thread that the person is part of.
#Yoyogi is not yet ready for serious use, with no support yet for media or for posting, but it is a good example of the innovation that is possible in an open platform.

“Yoyogi is, in simple terms, a Google Reader-inspired [#ActivityPub] reader app. It rejects The Timeline, where posts from lots of people are interleaved temporally. It instead elevates the author and centers the thread. You log in. You pick one account you’re following. You see just their threads.”
Like #Pinafore, it’s a client side browser app that talks to different servers.
A lot of #ToolsForThought people will love this. Made by @22

I've complained enough times about Mastodon, Pinafore, etc. slavishly copying Twitter's timeline presentation, and the last couple of weeks brought that to a head—a month ago I followed 15 people who posted infrequently. Today I follow ~120. And you crazy kooks post a lot. And I just cannot miss anything, especially from the quiet folks whose toots are ripe for drowning.
So Yoyogi is "non-timeline". You log in and it shows you all the people you follow. You pick one of them. It shows you all their toots, fully threaded. (I'm a sucker for threads.) (No, I really, really like threads.) So each thread has its own column, kind of like a newspaper. And you scroll right to see older stuff.
This is how I've consumed social media for a few years now. Whether through RSS readers or folders of bookmarks or now Yoyogi, I love consuming one person's posts, rooting around their replies, and then switching off. I decide when to visit each of my follows—some people I visit daily, others I have to gather up some spoons before I catch up with.
https://fasiha.github.io/yoyogi/ it's all client-side, like Pinafore, just your browser talking to your Mastodon instance—pretty secure and privacy-preserving.
Yoyogi is super-alpha right now, it doesn't even load avatar images or media, nor does it remember when you last visited whom. All that's coming I hope! But I'm already dog-fooding it and am so happy to have a more controlled Mastodon experience.
Because y'all are precious. But. Also a lot. #Yoyogi
Was thinking about adding an in-browser database for toots in Yoyogi (um, this non-timeline Mastodon reader app I made https://fasiha.github.io/yoyogi/) and thought, "PouchDB?" Went to check Pinafore, the other brainchild of Mister PouchDB, @nolan, and saw it uses raw IndexedDB! <rolling up sleeves to learn raw IndexedDB> #Yoyogi #PouchDB #Pinafore #IndexedDB
