Morning, Toots! I’m continuing to wade through some #FamilyHistory this morning - slower going as I transcribe unit histories, cross match with C.E.W. Bean’s Official History, and my ancestor’s war record. Sounds dry going, but it’s fascinating! Currently in the action of #Pozieres and #Ypres during September, 1916, with the 19th Infantry Battalion.

OTD in 1916, although decimated by German shelling from higher ground during the #WorldWarI Battle of #MontSorrel near #Ypres Belgium, Canadian 🇨🇦 troops pushed the Germans back to their original lines. 👉 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Mont_Sorrel

Also in 1916, residents of Berlin, Ontario held a referendum to change the name of their home city to Kitchener.

Researched: Dublin's James Clarke. A regular with Cameron Highlanders from June 1914, he served in France with 2nd Bn until ill during Second Ypres. Researched: Epsom's Charles Goby. Enlisted into E Surrey Rgt but transferred to Border Rgt. Served in Egypt and France. Wounded three times in all, incl at Beaumont-Hamel 1.7.1916 and Broodseinde 4.10.1917. Married and had a large family. Tragically, killed in 1935 road accident. #ww1 #somme #ypres #genealogy

The beautiful Menin Gate memorial to the missing in #Ypres. Whenever I’m in town I find time to visit the memorial. It’s particularly powerful at night, where the 54,000 or so names adorning it’s walls seem to speak that little bit louder. #FWW #MilitaryHistory
