Hi! Time for an #introduction. I've been on Mastodon for a few years, but recently have started creating accounts on specific instances for my differing interests.
Jazz moves me like no other musical style. At various times I've been into #Mingus, #YusefLateef, #RahsaanRolandKirk. These days my main buzz is #SpiritualJazz old and new.
I've been enjoying rebuilding a record collection again in the last year or two, since buying my last LP in 1989. #Bandcamp is my main source of new music.

#NowPlaying #YusefLateef Missed the email, but apparently this 1965 LP, along with a few other titles being pressed by Third Man is shipping via Verve, July 31st. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lGsPCAnMzPPH3-FcOqlCBCECsdgomNHVg
This is an excellent reissue of Yusef Lateef’s Detroit, 1969, in a cover so thick you could use it as a weapon. It’s the kind of album that should have been a classic but somehow wasn’t.
Some of it though is…challenging.
#NowPlaying Yusef Lateef - Psychicemotus (Impulse!, US 1965/1971 reissue).

Sun is now shining & I’m #NowPlaying #TheThreeFacesOfYusefLateef by #YusefLateef. This is the 4th offering from this month’s #VinylMePlease bundle.
This album is new to me & on the third listen, there is plenty to enjoy. For me, the tracks with tenor sax are closer to being my jam, but there is also some decent #jazz flute here. The oboe is less my thing & will need further listens.
This is AAA cut by #RyanKSmith & sound as good as you might expect.

“The Weaver” by Cannonball Adderley Sextet (1963)
https://songwhip.com/cannonball-adderley-sextet/the-weaver
A longer track, but so far the best 10:50 of my day! A smoking number performed live in Tokyo’s Senkei Hall.
This is a #YusefLateef composition, but the entire band wails. And that band also includes #CannonballAdderley #NatAdderley #SamJones #LouisHayes and #JoeZawinul
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the incredibly enthusiastic audience.
Great live record! 🔥

Some quiet contemplation this morning.
“The Plum Blossom” by Yusef Lateef (1961)
https://open.spotify.com/track/4HL2XUimEYLv0KDxD3Xpqz?si=9e8LEL9QThiRj2dwgX_Ulg
On this opening track, Lateef stakes out a meandering melody on a Chinese flute called a xun, and is supported brilliantly with some muted plucking by bassist Ernie Farrow, a nice counter melody and piano solo by Barry Harris, and barely-there-but-perfect percussion by Lex Humphries.
