The best thing I ever did for my feet was start wearing "barefoot" shoes for everything. Even backpacking and running. My toes have plenty of room, my ankles are stronger than ever, and my running stride is better. From beach, to sidewalk, to pavement, to Ricky trail, to fresh lava I've done it "barefoot" and at the end of a long day hiking I never feel the need to tear off my hiking shoes and switch to camp shoes.
