What options are there to regularly move #ZFS snapshots to a remote target that does not run ZFS?
zfs send feels clumsy. zfs-autobackup and zrepl do not support non-ZFS targets. What's left?
In each case, the system is creating and replicating snapshots regularly.
Most of the latency deltas you're seeing come from the snapshot/replication tasks. Without those, you do still get ZFS advantages—but not this catastrophically severe.
Note that #btrfs is displaying latencies two and sometimes THREE orders of magnitude higher than #ZFS across a disturbing amount of the range of results. This is not just an issue at the absolute fastest or slowest ends of the scale, this is... normality.

Why do I have to keep running #fsck to fix the bit map? #DebianLinux, 1T HD. Would #ZFS or Btrf preclude this problem? Most annoying!

@dekkzz76 I'm interested, #bcachefs' first-class support of caching devices and encryption are particularly interesting.
The fact it adds that *without* adding #ZFS' flaws of mostly requiring devices all the same size and not coping well with downgrading (enterprise assumptions™) is also part of what interests me (these are essential features #btrfs provides).
I'm probably going to wait for #SQLite and other #databases to have time to implement what support they need for it.

oops i forgot that because i use #zfs i have to do a deferred launch of #Arq because i have to unlock half a dozen filesystems via ssh before i login to windowserver and apparently i haven't done that in quite a while :grimace:
the good news is that the only things likely to have changed since july are things on zpools and those are redundant and backed up via #znapzend!
#zfs mafia recognize :joy:
Just discovered that #ZFS permissions delegations are almost useless on Linux, since it's 100% possible to create and manage datasets as a user (non-root), but not to mount them.
(it's a known and documented limitation)
I'm frustrated.
#PSA: You can have a degraded zraid without #ZFS actually showing a problem. I had a raid with a really, really bad write performance and an even worse read performance for the whole raid. Thankfully /var/log/messages hinted to a problem with one of the drives. Nothing serious, just some caching timeout. So I replaced that drive to check if that would change something. And thankfully it fixed the problem. Oh, and btw: Always keep spares around!

My #ZFS snapshot tool `zfsnapr` has been updated.
`zfsnapr` lets you recursively mount snapshots of your ZFS filesystems on a given location - primarily intended for backups using non-ZFS-aware tools.
The latest version finally supports limiting operations to specific pools (-p/--pool), and handling of missing mountpoints, e.g. due to parts of the system not being ZFS.
The latter also makes -r/--root more flexible as it is no longer restricted to a mountpoint.
