Is it best to stick with CasaOS on a ZimaBoard or go straight for proxmox? Want to use containers and add firewall and pihole capabilities.

Will build a TrueNAS solution on another box with internal drives.

Thinking it is time to build a proper homelab and stop depending on some VMs on my QNAP TS-453A (which is getting a bit old now) and a cluster of RaspberryPi SBCs.

Like the look of the ZimaBoard but would be too constrained for TrueNAS.

Thinking a used HP Z440 Workstation with a xeon processor would be a good base.

I did not imagine this Frankenstein of a connection to my veteran scsi slide scanner would just work. Literally plugged it all in and VueScan found the scanner and produced an image. I was expecting many, many hours of troubleshooting for this to work. My digital hoarder tendencies that resulted in keeping a pci scsi card for multiple decades with no reasonable expectation of it EVER being used have now been vindicated.

Steve,

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on one of those computers you talked about in SN#892, but before I do, I was wondering if there is a way to set it up with as the boot OS, and still be able to network Remotely in to "view/control" the SpinRite display, instead of connecting up a keyboard and monitor?

I think you mentioned you had some remote control solution to talk to your "DOS" version of SpinRite...?

Since Pi' are still insane to get your hands on I am branching out. Got a Zimaboard today and I gotta say... Insanely easy to setup and I'm very impressed with the power of this thing!

Don’t be suspicious
Don’t be suspicious

Short test run with the antenna combiners and amplifiers for the loss of signal. Seems stable. Running an older version of KismetWireless Nightly builds. The rig has been on a shelf in parts for almost 2 months.

LoLz.

Worked on the antenna combiner and the mini amps needed.

Significant loss on the antenna combiner and RF amplification to the radios help eliminate that loss.

Initial test with basic antennas seems to be very solid. Need to bolt everything down and get it back into the car.

I’ve got a for tinkering and noticed this “know your ports” section in the documentation that is potentially useful to many hardware nerds so I’m sharing it.

That’s a wrap for 2022 and the @wiglenet last canon ball run for December. Just casually dumping 300k new in Dec. to break 2M, get a 1M in 140 Days, and break the top 30 list. Been a busy two years. Thanks all for your help.

I am aware that some find this "hobby" silly and such.. But a Hobby is a Hobby...

I broke the 2 Million Found/New WiFi into the Database and did 1 Million Found/New in 140 days.

The rig with 16 WiFi Radios, 32 antennas and the bringing in another 14 Radios (on a single external antenna) has been amazingly stable with help from @kismetwireless in the Discord and software releases such as and features allowing for a mapping only process to reduce over head for the CPUs.

I wanted to break 2M before Years End and I nailed it.

But Dustin you said, how about portability ?

Oh. You thought I wasnt making anything portable?

Harbor Freight box, with squid 8 card WiFi 2.4-6Ghz and room for WiFi Coconut…I have one. LoL.

Due to celeron CPU this might be best only.

The has on board eMMC settings for storage and they are for single edge clock and double edge clock speeds. Can’t tell if there are any concerns about using the double edge clock HS400 vs default HS200 - but here’s a speed test incase you wanted to see what the data rate benefits were.

The portable WarDrive rig and the at home WiFi monitor are on their way to getting fully running.
