@markmcelroy #ZimDesktop has been delivering for me for almost 5 years, now :)
One of the things that it really does well -- that so many of the other #toolsForThought note-makers don't do as well -- is the Backlinks which are in a side-pane, so *always visible* instead of some footer div that has to be unfolded. The friction of even a single click is too far away imho.
Then, too, #Markdown is far from my favourite thing, so there's that... 😂

@mikro2nd It’s all about finding what works for you. For me, #Obsidian initially had a very utilitarian look and feel, but with time, I adjusted (and I found the right themes, and stumbled on ways to make the UI more attractive to me). I’m glad #ZimDesktop delivers what you need!
I keep trying to actually *like* #Obsidian, but...
I've installed it 4 times so far, worked with it for a little while and then deleted it. Not sure why I can't like it; perhaps it's that Electron apps all ignore and blatantly violate my every desktop and UI preference and convention.
So, despite it's somewhat old-school look & feel, I'm sticking to #ZimDesktop for my brain-notes. Just quietly stays out of my face and lets me get on with linking all my thoughts.
I have been using simplenote this past year or so and it's quite a simple and yet cool note taking appthat stays out of the way. Nevertheless, inspired by one of Lunduke's videos, I decided to look for an alternative where I have more control over the actual data (preferably txt) and yet with features I miss on simplenote (subnotes/subpages, images, tables, tasks...) and I rediscovered #zimdesktop on my old favorites! It has been a blast! Easy to use and saves txt that I can syncthing with phone
