I haven't been able to stand the heat as well, due to some health issues, but I finally got out to check the and it's growing well. Only issue: these are the last squash as vine borers got to them. Oh well! @gardening

We have had a lot of rain recently but the flowers seem to love it. Lots of blooms, though it's colder than it usually is this time of year. @gardening

I don't think it gets cold enough for hardneck garlic to really "take off" here, but it did pretty well without a hard winter. I just pulled them all and got one absolute monster. I am excited to taste them, and next year I'll do soft neck. @gardening@a.gup.pe @gardening@gup.pe

It's been cool lately, but that will change. Is it too late to plant beets in 7b central North Carolina? Any recommendations for heat tolerant beets? Last year I was able to grow lettuce throughout the summer heat using intensive planting of a heat tolerant lettuce mix - I was wondering if beets might be possible, also.

I have more wildflowers popping up everywhere but it's almost lunchtime and I have other obligations today, so I will leave you with blue-eyed grass (never heard of it before but I love it so much!), Venus's looking glass (this is everywhere in my yard) and some kind of mystery pink, apparently, and my woodland phlox!

Wanna see some cool flowers?

Some of these photos go back a bit so you can see some of our neat spring ephemerals. Some I don't know for sure are native in our area because I couldn't get a 100% ID on them so if you know, shout it out! Oh, I also have Virginia bluebells that I planted and they are doing great, but no flowers yet because it's only their first year. Same for my milkweed and spiderwort and false indigo.

Let's go!

I want to write a whole post on the Sassafras sapling that is cheerfully growing under my deck, because I had no idea that Sassafras trees had such a fascinating history! I'm not from around here, and have never seen one before but now I love it and will find a good home for it.

Bonus trees - we have some kind of hickory (mocknut?) growing all around the edge of my forest which I love because it will make so much food for the birds and squirrels!

It's been a little more than a year since we moved in and I'm starting to get a handle on the absolutely incredible diversity we have growing here. I planted 5 blueberries so far (since they are from this area), and I even have one blueberry growing to show for it!

Additionally, we have some really cool species I've never seen before, including Black Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica), and Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboretum). I'll put descriptions with my photos for ID.

I want to plant a persimmon tree in my small backyard and would like variety recommendations.

I'm in central North Carolina, Zone 7b, Trewartha code Cfhl. Last winter it got down to 11 deg F (-12 C).

The tree would need to be self-fertile ; prefer non-astringent.

Got all my tomato's, eggplants, and peppers transplanted yesterday. Have to wait two weeks to direct-sew beans, okra, melons, and sweet potato (maybe, I'm running out of room for the sweet potato, can I trellis the vines?

Bonus photos of my strawberry plants (with garden gnome, Talia) and my Serviceberry blooms.

Tromboncino squash are supposed to be resistant, but I have not tried them.

A bit worried the Black Beaty zucchini were benefitting from a trap crop effect & if I don't grow anything vulnerable, the SVB will go for them. OTOH I'm hoping the hard freezes killed off some of the pupae since we don't normally get them here & pupae might not burrow as deep as in colder areas.

If you see these pupae on your brassica leaves - don't get rid of them. They are braconid wasp pupae - they parasitize cabbage loopers. I put them back in the arugula patch after taking the picture. This year I will try to grow sweet alyssum to feed the adult wasps.

Last year I got next to nothing from my 3 delicata & 3 kabocha plants - besides a massive amount of greens for the compost pile. Why? Squash vine borer. Injecting the vines w/ Bt did not work as they infested solid parts of the stem base.

I got the second round of seeding done today - 304 more plants for a total of 520 currently under way. And this isn't even for summer crops yet 😅. It's all greens, some brassicas, onions, herbs, and various flowers.

Here's some of the Butterfly Milkweed heading to the fridge for cold stratification. These greens boxes come in handy for this because they keep the moisture in and are easy to use for small batches of seeds.

Sowing some

Ragged Jack or Red Kale
Arugula, Northern Lettuce,
Mustards and Pak Choi

Cold frames extend my early season for greens. Can harvest small leaves starting March.

By June too hot for most & kales need to wrapped against those dang white moths. Time to swap in tomatoes & peppers!!

Pix is late Feburary 2020.
