Where are my #zone8b #gardening folks? My yard was never precisely verdant and with this intense summer heat I'm feeling just about despondent over the lack of green in my life. How are you all coping? Any clever tricks to coax a little life into your yards that I could try for next season?

Harvested rhubarb from the garden today. It took several years to get this one established, but now produces reliably. Made enough rhubarb chutney to last us until next year. #garden #zone8b

Today was Beltaine. The best way I could think to celebrate the start of Celtic summer was by planting my Dahlia tubers. Three of the four I stored from last year didn't look their best when I brought them out, put I planted them anyway, as I figured the worst that could happen is nothing. With my new acquisitions, I now have sixteen in total.
As if approving of my efforts, a Queen Bumblebee flew through my garden.

A few weeks ago I caved and bought a generically labelled #Dahlia tuber from the Dollar Store. It has no indication of variety, even though the one pictured is called Veritable. It also claims to be a decorative type Dahlia, despite the one pictured being a semi-cactus.
Today I planted it out, in a pot, just in case it turns out to have gall. The tubers are small, so it's probably a reject from a breeder but curiosity got the best of me so we'll see.

So, from my local dahlia society's tuber sale yesterday, my new stash of dahlias includes Thomas A. Edison, Don Hill, Polvention Supreme, Gay Triumph, Rock Star, Pooh, Bloomquist Joel, Hannah's Sunset, PGK Snowflake (a new introduction bred by the president of the society), and Raspberry Royale. Can't wait to see them in action this July.

Absolutely itching. It's been a long winter, and today is actually our average last frost date. Still watching to see how it goes, but hopefully by mid-April I'll be in full swing.

@ingalls I grew some dwarf tomatoes in containers on a north-facing balcony last year. I also had a larger volunteer that popped up in a container with other plants, that I let grow. Overall, they did better than I expected, but grew slowly and were very rangy. I did get tomatoes late in the season, though. If I grow them again, I'm going to try to get an earlier start on the season. I'm not sure if I will, though. They're relatively high-maintenance for the amount they produce here.
