More from Killuragh cave, Ireland. This distal humerus (fore leg) bone from a pig of wild boar found in the same pit fill as Arctic lemming, Irish mountain hare and wood mouse. Hopefully we can get it radiocarbon dated. Starting to prepare #IrishCaveBones from Killuragh Cave, Co. Limerick for Licencing applications to the National Museim of Ireland, for radiocarbon dates, #aDNA and stable isotopes from multi-species. Including #dogs ! Will be photographing these & more later in the week and filling in the licence forms. According to FAO, “in 2020, the global chicken population was over 33 billion birds.” 🐓🐓🐓
Indeed, although much is said about dogs, the #Anthropocene animal is #chicken.
Domesticated in Asia, their oldest evidences are from ∼1650 to 1250 BCE in central Thailand (Peters et al. 2022).
Their oldest remains in Europe are from the #IronAge (Best et al. 2022). Greek and Phoenician merchants transported and introduced chickens around the Mediterranean and trade networks promoted its fast expansion further north.
From my experience as chickens are one of the most common zooarchaeological remains in Iberian #Roman and #Medieval contexts and, for sure, one of the our food staples since then.
Nowadays, there are hundreds :100a: of chicken breeds. Guess what's for lunch? 🍗
