Dog #7, Chancery Lane, Dublin city, Ireland. On the River Poddle, excavated by Alan Hayden. A nice near complete large-type dog skull. - Ruth

The Newtown site is a hinterland site, out in the landscape at some distance away from the heart of Dublin City within the old city walls. This site and it’s dogs will provide a good contrast to the urban (within the walls) sites. This large dog was perhaps a farm working dog?

ℹ️ Proteomics, the large-scale study of proteins, is a fantastic "new" tool for . It allows different researches, including species πŸ¦πŸ¦’πŸ¦“ and sex ⚀ determination or identification of microorganisms 🦠 that caused ancient diseases 🀒.

National Geographic has a nice cover of its potential:

More from Killuragh cave, Ireland. This distal humerus (fore leg) bone from a pig of wild boar found in the same pit fill as Arctic lemming, Irish mountain hare and wood mouse. Hopefully we can get it radiocarbon dated. Very visible parallel fine cut incised marks on the bone associated with butchering practices by humans.

Alas, the spider infested bone shed has to wait due to rain (& my fear). But fear not … Irish archaeology and bones won’t be stopped in their tracks for I have phoned a friend for help for Wednesday afternoon. Pray the rain gods hold their water!!! Pray the large spiders go away!

According to FAO, β€œin 2020, the global chicken population was over 33 billion birds.” πŸ“πŸ“πŸ“

Indeed, although much is said about dogs, the animal is .

Domesticated in Asia, their oldest evidences are from ∼1650 to 1250 BCE in central Thailand (Peters et al. 2022).

Their oldest remains in Europe are from the (Best et al. 2022). Greek and Phoenician merchants transported and introduced chickens around the Mediterranean and trade networks promoted its fast expansion further north.

From my experience as chickens are one of the most common zooarchaeological remains in Iberian and contexts and, for sure, one of the our food staples since then.

Nowadays, there are hundreds :100a: of chicken breeds. Guess what's for lunch? πŸ—
